Task scheduler fails to operate before login

Hi,

I have been struggling with the task scheduler since upgrading to Vista. I used to have the XP task scheduler run Realplayer when my PC turned on via the bios RTC each morning, and play BBC Internet Radio. Worked fine, no problems.

Vista however simply cannot do it. I have setup the Vista Task Scheduler to run a command line that I know works - I have tried dummy runs of the task scheduler when I have been logged in, and it goes no problem. I have also ticked "Run whether user is logged on or not" and entered my password when prompted.

When I login after Realplayer has failed to launch, the Task Scheduler history tab shows the following:
Event 107, Task triggered on scheduler, etc, then above it, Error, event 101, Task Start Failed, Launch Failure.

Most interestingly, in the failure details it reads:
"Task Scheduler failed to start "\Alarm Radio" task for user "ROTOMA\Dave". Additional Data: Error Value: 2147943726."

What I find strange here is why the user is ROTOMA\Dave (ROTOMA being the name of my Workgroup) when the user account is DAVES-DESKTOP\Dave.

Could this be causing the problem, and if so how do I fix it?

As an aside, the task will successfully run if I login to my PC before the scheduled task, then logout and wait at the login screen.

Any help would be much appreciated,

Dave

Hi,

Unfortunately it didn't help.

It seems the task is set up fine: it runs when I am logged in, and even runs if I am logged off IF I have already logged in previously while my PC has been turned on.

Unfortunately, the first time my PC turns on in the morning it simply will not run the scheduled task unless I am logged in.

I have tried turning UAC off, running with highest priviledges, inverting the "Run whether user is logged on or not" settings, but to no avail. I have at least managed to have it run from the correct user account, but I don't think that was causing the problem.

I may well be alone here...:(

well that didnt work. if i remove the password the task still fails to start. if I tell it to not remember password same problem, although the error # is different. when i edit the task, vista gives me an error about not allowed to have a null password, could probably turn off more security features to work around that...

but I've decided to run my task as LOCAL SERVICE. my test task now runs at startup running as USERNAME=LOCAL SERVICE.

Hi

That's probably the only solution for this mpegg & Tevita, if it's under your username then it can't run until you log in. Local Service is the system default Admin account and is what runs before any other user is logged in, so this is probably the only solution.
