Administrator Permission

When I try to organize the folders on my desktop I get the following pop up message: "You'll need to provide administrator permission to move to this folder" and when I press CONTINUE I get another pop up that says "Windows needs permission to continue" and then you press CONTINUE another pop up says "You need permission to perform this action" and then I press "TRY AGAIN" to no avail.

This is a common occurrence and I have to restart the computer to be able to move this folder and then it doesn't always work. This is extremely frustrating. I have NEVER had this issue with Windows XP.

I have tried the cmd.exe method without any success. Has anyone had success resolving this issue? Please help.

Hello stormiii, welcome to Vista forums!

Are you attempting this in a "Standard User" or an "Standard Administrator" account?

Also have you tried to Take Ownership of the files?

Keep us informed1

I am not extremely computer literate so help me out here when you ask if I am using it as a "Standard User" or "Standard Administrator." I automatically assumed that I was using it as administrator because I don't have this pc set up for guest users. Can you tell me how to determine how I am signed in?

Hello.

Are you using the account you had to set up when you first activated Windows? If so that is the default administrator account.

Yes, I have only had the pc for two months and have never had another account set up for it so I am guess I am using the administrator account. When I follow the steps posted it has my name only and then it says Administrator Password Protected.

I downloaded the first Add "Take-Ownership" and it worked for a couple of files but not the last one I was working with.

I then tried the cmd in the search box and right-clicked on the Run as Administrator and typed in: takedown /f and I received the following message:

'takedown is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

Agh! I am totally frustrated with Vista.

Aha! I got the file to move by right-clicking on it on the desktop before moving it and clicking on "Take Ownership," clicking on Continue on the pop up box and then cutting and pasting it to the destination folder.

I think perhaps this is what you BOTH were trying to tell me and I just got it. Thank you so much for the time you put into helping me!! It is much appreciated. You BOTH are great!!

PS Ted, I like your Jesus link, can't wait to tear myself away from work a few minutes to check out the entire site. God bless you!

That is cool. I will have to try that. That is the one I haven't tried. I have had more problems with Vista than the law allows since I crashed the hard drive on my XP.

You have no idea how grateful I am and particularly at the quick responses I received. I hope I will be as helpful to others one day.

Hello syormiii.

Thank you, and you're welcome and GOD bless you too.

I use the copy/move to all the time and it's great. Brink does a real good job with the tutorials!

Keep hanging out here and you'll learn all you need to know about Vista; start HERE.

I'm pleased you've found a solution. Keep looking up!
