Solved Is It Worth Going To 64bit

I just want to hear peoples thoughts, i have a 64 CPU, but only 32 bit vista OS, is it REALLY WORTH upgrading to 64 bit. Are all the compatability issues sorted? Really i just want to know, will i see a noticeable difference in speed?

Thanks, Ben. :D

Hello vistablackben.

I just installed 64-bit Ultimate for the first time ever and I'm having no problems at all.

The only concerns are ...

1. Will all the programs/applications you will want to run do so in 64-bit?

2. Are there drivers available for all the hardware of the machine in question?

If the answer to both of these is yes; then go for it. IMO, get Ultimate, not Home Premium.

Hi Ben,

I suppose it depends on if you have a 64-bit CPU, 64-bit drivers available for all of your devices, how much RAM (ex: over 3.2 GB) you have or want, and how you use your computer. If yes to these, then 64-bit could be worth it.

The articles in this post may help answer some of your questions to though.

Download all the drivers for your hardware. Include printers, network card, scanners, video cards. Everything. Alot of hardware does not support 64-bit. Make sure none of your programs are 16-bit. You need 32-bit and 64-bit apps. Verify your favorite games will work.

Thanks, Ben.

There are actually 4 models with the part number 6100M2MA. For convenience, I enclose both 32-bit and 64-bit links to the chipset drivers. The Realtek drivers are both 32-bit and 64-bit in the same package. Please note that the Realtek website and downloads are notorious for being extremely slow.

TBH i have no idea which one, but thanks anyway, been a great help, the 32 bit ones i got from here, after running aida32 it just returns 6100M2MA

Foxconn - Support - Downloads

and they all seem to be working fine, so i guess model number may not make a big difference or mine is one of the above, either way, now i have the 3 essential drivers for my hardware in 64 bit, so now i will get 64 bit OS and will consider moving to it. Right now though 32bit vista is running fine and very fast, although i have 4gb RAM i am obviously not seeing that until 64. But as im not running any hardcore games or applications il stay where i am.

Thanks for all the help, Happy Christmas, Ben  :D

Hi Ben,

Although I had listed the motherboards individually, they all use the same motherboard drivers. As regards the audio drivers, they all use Realtek and the AC'97 version with the exception of 6100M2MA-8EKRS2H, which uses the HD version.
Good luck with the install, and if you have any problems please post back and we'll endeavour to help you solve them.

Merry Christmas Ben to you as well,

There should be a small white sticker on the motherboard with the exact model and serial number on it. The box it came in should also have a sticker on it with information as well. You wouldn't want to install the wrong chipset and especially BIOS version.

Hope this helps,
Shawn
