New Vista System - Adding old XP HD as Slave

Hi all,

First of all apologies if this has been covered before, I have been searching the internet for the last 24 hours trying to find a solution and to be honest there does not seem to be a simple answer as there are so many difference scenarios I cant find one that matches mine

First of all, I built my new PC a couple of days back installed vista ultimate 64 which is all good. The new HD is attached to the mother board via a SATA connection. I removed my old XP drive from the old PC and installed it to the new system also however as its quite old I have had to use the IDE connection on the mother board and set the jumpers to slave. I want to be able to access all my old music, photos etc.

Now Vista picks up the old XP drive through “computer” but when I try to access it, it sates I need to reformat the drive which of course I totally want to avoid!

I made sure the (ribbon type) IDE cable is using the correct (grey) slave connection and also made sure the jumper is set to slave. Apparently there is no need to set anything else to master as I’m using SATA connections. The old drive was also previously operational prior to the new build so I know there are no issues there.

Maybe because I’m using SATA for the other HD and DVD-ROM I can set the OLD HD to master?????

Anyone know a fix for this, or how I can access this drive it would be greatly appreciated!!

Many thanks in advance! :D

i think your xp hard drive must be in fat 32 format, and vista cannot read from that, unfortunately, they only thing i can suggest is if you put the hard drive in an xp machine, attach an external hard drive, copy the folders you want to keep onto that and format the IDE drive to NTFS, copy them back and there you go

i think your xp hard drive must be in fat 32 format, and vista cannot read from that,

Um, yes it can,

fat32.jpg

if it couldn't read FAT32 then anyone with a USB stick would be in big trouble. If I remember correctly it can't format a drive as FAT32, there is no problem reading from it.

Maybe because I’m using SATA for the other HD and DVD-ROM I can set the OLD HD to master?

It probably won't help, but if it is the only drive on the cable then it should be set to master. If all else fails put the drive back in the old computer and network them together (either router or directly) and transfer what you want off that way.

I would not put an IDE drive with your SATA. SATA drives are cheap and much faster. I would invest in a new drive. IDE is usually slower and old drives tend to cause problems.

I had the same type problem with my old Vista drive. I upgraded HD to 320G from 120G and proceeded to install Vista 32bit on the new HD and set up the old drive as a slave drive. When Vista was installed it would not read it. It was a Western Digital HD and the old was a Seagate. I used the cd the WD came with and tried to see what I could do for it to recognize it and still would not. Apparently the two drives are not compatible with each other. When I used the data tools it started to format the old HD, tried to stop but was too late. On a sidenote I did this before with two Western Digital HD and had no problems. Thought it was weird. Hope you didn't lose your info like I did.

Thanks all for your comments, I think I might go down the USB enclosure route to see if it makes any difference. Failling that I will probably put it back in the old PC, or get someone to transfer the files for me to a brand new external HD and use it for back up.

Its a pain, everything was going so smoothly! :sleepy:

Thanks again! :D

I've never seen 2 drives of different makes be " incompatible " with each other...there must have been other issues.
