Solved How to add more space to my Vista partition

Pain In The Butt
Power User
I am running vista 64 and want to add more space to my os partition. I have my hdd partitioned to dual boot XP(which I don't really use anymore) and Vista Ultimate 64 bit. I then have documents etc on the other partition with about another 400GB of space left. I have had to add some more things to my vista os and with sp1 and sp2 coming out shortly I would like to add some more of my unused space to it. What programs do people use for vista on this? Thanks.

Hi,

Depending on what you are trying to, you may find Vista Disk Management too limited.

A lot of us use Paragon Partition Manager 9 -works great on Vista x64 and on Windows Seven.

PARAGON REDIST2009-01-18_172312.jpg

Paragon Partition Manager – resize partitions, partitioning software

If you are looking for a free alternative you could try this - tho. you will probably need to do a startup repair when you've finished

Using GParted to Resize Your Windows Vista Partition :: the How-To Geek

here's the direct d/l for a tiny free isoburner - works great , just runs straight away - I use to burn iso to cd all the time

http://www.ntfs.com/downloads/Iso-burner.zip

This is the version of Gparted I have used - direct d/l

http://downloads.sourceforge.net/gparted/gparted-0.4.1.tar.bz2?modtime=1227957187&big_mirror=0

Hope it helps

Can you delete your old partition and just create a new one for your Vista install? This would create a second "drive" (like drive D:\) but would still give you more space.

I know you want to have one bigger partition, but that solution would work about the same....

Hi ingeborgdot,

Exactly how is your disk currently partitioned?

I have not had a problem with it.

If you wish to move system files on the System partition - rather than just shrinking free space - use the bootable disc it will create for you.

I attached the bootable disk ISO (recovery media builder), so there is no need to install Paragon. Just burn the DVD/Floppy disk for the partitioning software in linked thread above, then Merely shrink/create/delete/expand partition(s). Simple and easy.

Here is a walkthrough on how to remove Dual Boot:

Hi Ingeborgdot,

Vista Disk Management will only extend to the right ( in Disk Management view ).

Could you post a screenshot of the Disk Management window please ?

Thanks

Hi,

The simplest way to add more space to your Vista drive is to take space from the Music drive on it's right.

1. Defrag the E drive - Vista's defrag will be very slow - d/l the free Auslogics program and use that - it could still take awhile depending how badly fragmented it is.

Disk Defrag - Reclaim the Speed Of Your Disks

2. In Disk Manangement, right click the E drive and select Shrink - this will tell you how much you can shrink it by.

If you are lucky, it will be 230gb or more. Shrink it by the max it allows. You now have unallocated space of that size ( black bar across the top ).

3. Right click the new unallocated space and select New simple Volume , it will suggest a drive letter ( probably H which will be fine ) also select Quick Format.

When the format is finished, Restart the pc. You now have another partition ( it will be green in Disk Management, which means an extended partition - don't worry about that , it's fine for storing data )

4. In Explorer ( not disk management ) copy the entire contents of the E drive to the new drive, H. That will take a while. Check it has all copied across to your satisfaction.

5. You can now go into Disk Management, right click the E drive and select Delete. This will now be unallocated space.

6. Right click the C drive and select extend to incorporate all that unallocated space into a much larger C drive.

Hope it helps

I see what you are saying. This is very interesting and I do still have some more questions before I start.
Will I be able to get my drive E back with the name E.
I just want to make my c drive another 50 GB or so not much more than that unless you think there is a need to have it larger.
Drive E is now 110GB full. Let's see if I have this straight though. I will shrink it as much as I can. I will select New simple volume and whatever letter is suggests with a quick format. Copy entire contents to new drive letter and check. Go into disk management and delete E. Go into C and extend. Simple.
Questions though. This means that my C will now be 110GB larger. Can I go in an move some stuff over to another drive for now and make it smaller so that when I do this my E will be only about 50GB or so? I think I may have some more questions before I do this but thanks soooo much for your time so far. I really appreciate it.

Hi,

U can use the extend partition option in vista. The only thing is if u want to icrease the os partition u should delete all the other partition except the os partition.

Step1- back up data in all other partitions usin externel hard disk(or u can copy those files in to ur os partition also).
Step2- delete all other partitions,
Step3- extend the os partition using extend partition option,
Step4- create partitions and restore ur datas.

Let me know the result

Hi I ngeborgdot,

Sure, you can make a folder on another drive, move some (70 -80gb ) , or all of the contents of your E drive on there. There's plenty of space on your backup G drive for that.

You will be able to Shrink E much further, make a bigger new partition H - and be left with a smaller E.

You will be able to delete that smaller E , then extend C to include that now smaller unallocated space.

You could Rename the H to E as that letter is not being used.

It would take along time to shift all that music to another drive and then onto the new partition , of course.

Hope it helps

There is another way to do it.

Use a bootable partition manager - either Linux Gparted, or the Dos one Echrada posted earlier may be simpler -( make sure your mouse is installed in a ps/2 port as some don't support usb mouse connections ).

It gives a window somewhat similar to Disk Management.

You then grab hold of the left edge of the partition you want to shrink, and drag it 50gb to the right. Press Apply or Next, and wait ( a long time, an hour at least )- it will move that 100gb of music data 50gb across to the right.

You will then have that 50gb unallocated space between the C drive and the smaller E drive.

Then use Vista Disk Management to extend the C partition to incorporate the 50gb unallocated space.

Hope it helps

What if I would get rid of everything in the E drive and move it to my G. That would take a lot less time than doing with Gparted. Then do the Gparted move. When done add all the stuff back to the E drive.

Hi,

If you are going to move everything from E onto G - that would be fine.

You wouldn't then need Gparted.

1. After you have moved /copied all from E onto G, go into Disk Management and rt click and delete E.

2. Rt click C and Extend another 50gb.

3. Rt click the remaining unallocated space, create New Simple Volume, assign letter E, select Quick Format. When done, restart.

All you need to do then is copy/move your Music from G back to the new E.

That is very simple, but moving all your Music twice will take a long while.

Hope it helps
