Keyboard quit working in Vista x64

Vista 64 Keyboard problem Can't figure this one out. The keyboard simply stopped working one day in my Vista 64 "archive/experiment" machine. Not the keyboard or CMOS. I also have XP and Windows 7 64 on separate disks on this machine, and they all work fine with any variation of keyboards/drivers.

Keyboard works until the VISTA 64 logon screen comes up. After Log in using the on-screen KB, device manager shows drivers for the keyboard are "Error 39" in device driver. Same error condition in Safe Mode; tried installing fresh drivers, NIL. Tried installing USB keyboard, NIL. All variations work with both XP and Windows 7 64. Has to be within this install of Vista 64. Last changes prior to failure were series of Windows and Office updates. Have unistalled them (except for SP for Office), still same problem.

This is the first problem I've ever encountered that has me stymied. Short of doing a reinstall of VISTA 64, haven't found a way around this. I've looked but can't find any conflicts in either drivers nor registry entries. Has to be some unrelated SW that stops this driver. Pretty clean system, Office 2007 w/SP's, Nero Ultra 8 (9 is awful), Roxio 2009. I've reinstalled the gateway drivers, MS drivers, etc. NIL. I've unistalled NERO since the v9.0 was an abomination. Deleted the KB drivers in both SYSTEM32 and in WOW64 folders, installed clean copies. NIL. System is Gateway FX530, QUAD, 8800GTX, 8GB memory, 3 SATA drives, each with own OS.

Suggestions?

Hello Jon, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might see if doing a System Restore using a restore point dated when you knew the KB was working may fix it for you.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Unfortunately, my last restore point was after the updates. I was a bit dilatory in updating that detail. I've finally given up and installed Windows 7 as an upgrade and all works well except there is no 64 bit flash player for IExplorer 8.

There are a few other glitches, 3D Mark crashes the system, but that's not unexpected. A few 3rd party, 32 bit apps have erratic behaviour, but Windows 7 seems fairly stable. Several of the system functions aren't working yet.

This is the first computer problem I've ever encountered that I couldn't solve.
