Hi Sebas, welcome to the board.

Here is two things you may like to try. Boot the pc into safe mode by pressing F8 when you turn on the pc which leads you to a boot option. Select safemode.

When you are in safe mode try restore the computer to some earlier restore point. If not helping, backup you data in safe mode then reinstall Vista.

The problem might have been causing by Virus and your bf unplugged it in a panic.

Hope this helps.

thank you very much Bruce for replying to mu question. I have tried what you said and when i select safe mode, the screen will just stay black with the mouse point hsnging out, and i cant make any operation...

Is there any way that i could save some of my data and reinstall Vista?

My Computer

Sebas, since you phrased " unplug the pc", I assume you have a desktop.

Seems like you might have had a bad hard drive. In that case you are not likely to get anything out of it. Try repair first, if not helping then try reinstall; if both failed, then you need a new hard drive.

If the above is true, install OS on a new drive and then hook the old drive on another port to see if you can look into it and retrieve the goods. But don't get your hopes up.

Let us know how things go.

it could be due to some changes made to the registry. access "Last known good configuration" instead of "safe mode" by pressing F8 key as bruce guided....so that it can replace the corrupted registry with good one.

you can try few other steps if you have vista disc.
boot from disc and access "repair your computer" where you see "install now" option.
you have several options here.....you could try "startup Repair", "system restore" or you can take a backup into your external hdd from command prompt (access command prompt> type notepad > press enter (a normal notepad will open) > click file and click on save (you will see your C drive and external hdd) > copy what ever you want from c drive and paste it in external hdd

good luck.

See if i get a new hard drive.

you don't have to get new hdd. if you are able to boot from vista disc then you have several options to fix the problem

let me know your computer manufactures so that i can guide you how to change the boot priority to boot from vista disc.

Hi Sebas, prasathkumar's suggestion is a good idea.
Let me ask what happen when you boot with the installation disk in the optical drive?
Post your specs will be really helpful. Thanks.

Ok here i go lol
I run the pc and press f10, boot the windows vista cd, then i made it through System Recovery Options, where they give me a few recovery tools such as start up repair, system restore and more. I already tried Start up repair but doenst find any error. There are a few tabs down the windows... Shut down and restart... Where should I go from there???

My Computer

Now try system restore. if that does not fix the issue then you may have to take a backup to the external hdd and reinstall vista.

one more information. if you proceed with installation without formatting the hdd then these is a option to retrive your data from a folder called windows.old (that is your old vista OS).

Here is the screenshot. if you are ready to reinstall os and wants to retrive data.
Note: please do not click on "FORMAT". Just click on next and proceed.

if you have upgrade disc then complete the installation without putting product key.

good to hear that you are back to desktop. just go ahead and delete "windows.old" which you can find under c:\ drive or run "disk cleanup" to free up atlease 15 to 20 GB.

Happy learning :)
