Reinstalling Vista and going to slipstream it so advice please...

So, I'm in need of a reinstall and I figured I'd give slip streaming a shot. What registry tweaks should I go ahead and enable in the install and any useful programs you think I should add to it?

Also, should I just go back to XP x64? Everyone is saying yes, yes, go back, but I've paid for this and just not sure.

Well if you are going to slipstream two things to consider:
If you have SATA HDD's you might want to slipstream the sata driver. and I recommend slipstreaming the SP1.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/151606-vista-sp1-slipstream-installation-dvd.html

Personally, With Ultimate it is easier to fully install all drivers/updates/programs and create an Image with Vista's complete pc Imaging Utility that is essentially a recovery disk(s). (similiar to what one gets with a computer known as a factory image disk).

For those without the Imaging Utility in Business and Ultimate versions (i.e., Premium/basic) there is a free 3rd party Disk backup Imaging tool that does the same:

Wouldn't it be better to use my OEM disc since it's legit and fully updated and all? And I know about the imaging utility, but I want to slip stream applications and my specific drivers so it's all ready to go when it's installed.

Use you OEM disk , and create another bootable slipstreamed disk with the tutorial above (for slipstreaming sp1), as for adding programs and such, the process should be similiar.

I still think the best and easiest way is to re-install off your oem disk, load all drivers, all updates, all programs, get it just the way you want, and then use Vista's backup utility to make a complete PC backup image. This is identical to a system "recovery image", or "restore factory image", and allows you to restore to that exact point in time that it was created (this is very useful for say hard drive upgrades).,

note- I upgraded from 200GB RAID 0 to 640GB RAID 0. After I created my image, inserted the new drives, and restored from the Image, my system was exactly as it was on the old drives, and the process took less than 30 minutes (my backup image consisted of 5 DVD's)

To use it you would simply boot off the OEM vista disk, boot into advanced recovery options, select "Windows Complete PC Restore", and Insert the last disk (if you backed up the image to disks), as this contains all instructions/data for the image. Then, you insert the first disk at prompt. (so number them, and make sure you mark the final last disk as "boot")

I think I'll just do that. I'm so horrible at organization though that I've filled up my 500gb external drive already with backups going back to August of last year. I might just go delete it all except for my music. Time to get installers for all of my software so there's no downloading after the install.

I actually use my external to house my PC Backup image, and weekly Filebackups.

I'm going through the external drive now and cleaning it out. Then I went through all 400gb of crap on the main drive to see what I could get rid of. So, now I'm down to about 50gb of files (words, etc, etc) and all. Now my 750gb internal drive seems like a ****en heaven for me lol.

I'm going to just install Vista again, update it fully, add the drivers, etc and then make a backup image. Then I'll come back here on how to do the weekly backups.

How would I make a pc image?

Image:
start>in search, type backup>click "backup and restore center">click "backup Computer"

for file backup, click "backup files", check all the boxes, and set it for automatic weekly (if you use an external for the backups, be sure to turn on the external prior to the weekly backup, or you will have to manually backup).

note- the first file backup will be approx 20GB+, after that the weekly backup will only backup files that have changed since the last backup was performed.

Is there a way to set how it names the backups? I always like having my names in the following format:

year_month_day_* (09_04_10_*).

*: one word description of backup

A 500gb external with 400gb free should be big enough for a 750gb internal drive you think?

Also, would it be beneficial to make a small 45gb OS partition for vista and then another partition for the programs, etc?

backups set will be located in a folder by date

on a 640GB HDD The backups for both the files/images will be approx 50Gb+ and will steadily increase for the file backup as changed files are added.

I store program data (purchased software), and Movies in individual folders on the same drive as my backups.

I really should of invested in a nice 60gb SSD for the OS and used the 750gb and external 500gb for programs/backups. Oh well, I guess I'll just make a serperate partition for the OS and data then.

My external drive never gets unhooked so you think it'd be safe to put my page/swap file on there even if it's never used (8gb ram)?

What tutorials should I look at to increase performance after the install/update?

60Gb? for Vista? it would be 50% filled just with the Vista Install.

Get maximum performance from Windows Vista - Windows Vista Help
If you have more than one physical disk, moving the page file to a fast drive that doesn’t contain your Windows system files is a good idea. Using multiple page files split over two or more physical disks is an even better idea, because your disk controller can process multiple requests to read or write data concurrently. Don’t make the mistake of creating two or more page files using multiple volumes on a single physical disk, however. If you have a single hard disk that contains C, D, and E volumes, for example, and you split the page file over two or more of these, you might actually make your computer run more slowly than before. In that configuration, the heads on the physical disk have to do more work, loading pages from different portions of the same disk sequentially, rather than loading data from a single contiguous region of the hard disk.
If you are short of hard disk space, you might consider setting a smaller initial page file size. You can use a handy script from Windows MVP Bill James to monitor current page file usage and session peak usage. This tool, a free download at BillsWay.com, was written for Windows XP but works fine in Windows Vista. If this script nearly always shows current and peak usage levels well below the current page file size, you might want to consider reducing the initial size to save disk space. On the other hand, if you’re not short of disk space, there’s nothing to be gained from doing this and you might occasionally overload your custom settings, thereby degrading the performance of your system.
Should you enlarge your page file? Most users won’t need to do this. But you might want to keep an eye on the green line in the Memory graph of Resource Overview, as described above in "Ensuring that you have adequate RAM." If that line is spiking off the top of the graph a great deal of the time during your normal work, you might consider increasing the maximum size of your page file. (Disregard page file spikes and disk activity in general that takes place while you’re not actually working. This is likely to be the result of search indexing, defragmentation, or other background processes and does not indicate

I may just go out and buy another smaller internal drive for the OS. 100gb or 80gb should do fine for the Vista install right? And then set the page file to that same drive since it rarely gets used with as much RAM as I got.

80gb for Vista (sep. drive) - page file for 750gb and 80gb on here
750gb for data/programs/music (sep. drive)
500gb external for backups/etc

500gb external for backups/etc

My philosophy for Vista is the opposite I get the biggest drives I can afford, then array them in RAID 0 (for double capacity and increased disk writing/reading (i.e. better performance)
Then I get the biggest external I can afford and use it as a seperate volume. I do not partition my HDD's. I create an Image of my Array, and do file backups weekly.

for example (my notebook):
I have two (2) 320GB 7200RPM HDD's in RAID 0 for 640GB of C: drive storage (system boot/Vista drive), and another 320GB 7200rpm External used for Backups/data storage.

Shadow copy???

I guess I'll just stick with what I got then. Should be plenty of space for a while even if I rip all my DVDs to it LOL. I'll be back in an hour or so installing Vista.

Also, why does the Vista install take so damn long. It seems like it'd be fast since my PC is really nice, but it takes for EVER to even get to the enter key page, etc.

In Vista Business/Ultimate Shadow Copy allows you to recover deleted/altered files and folders. Shadow Copy is also what enables you to do a system restore. The default is 15% of the HDD. Even a 100GB storage max (what I have) of shadow copy only allows me to recover/restore within 30 days or so.

2GB ram is really not much. I run 4GB. Consider getting more RAM. Your system will be faster. Also after your re-install do this:
