HELP - Lost Word doc on Vista - USB, overwritten file

Hello
I was editing my assignment which was saved on my USB but not the hard drive (silly I know but it's not my computer), and when I tried to save it to my USB, around 5 different messages flashed up saying bad things (unfortunately I can't remember what), and then word closed, and all of the work that I had done had disappeared and was replaced with an earlier version of the document.
I've downloaded Recuva, and used it on my USB, and I think I have found the documents that I want, but one of them is unrecoverable because it's been overwritten by the word file on my USB. Another is recoverable but when I tried to open it it said that the file might be corrupt.
I really needed this information today, is there anythign you can think of to do to get access to a file that was overwritten? There aren't any hidden files? Or is it all gone?

the only way to truly "delete" files on a drive is to overwrite it. If it has been overwritten it is not recoverable.

A disk forensic expert might be able to recover it, though.

Thankyou for being so quick. That's both helpful and depressing.
Do you think there's any possibility, even though the file that I wanted has been overwritten on my USB, that it's lurking around on the hard drive somehow?

Maybe this will help:

Microsoft Word documents can be lost in certain situations. For example, the document may be lost if an error occurs that forces Word to quit, if you experience a power interruption while editing, or if you close the document without saving changes. This article explains steps that you can use to try to recover the lost document.

Note The whole document may be lost if you have not recently saved the document. If you have saved your document, you may lose only the changes that you made since the last save. Note that some lost documents may not be recoverable.

Use the following methods in the order in which they are presented, as appropriate for your situation.
