too long boot time (nearly 200 seconds)

hi every one
i use a hp pavilion laptop with 2 gb ram and centrino1.73ghz c2d vista ultimate 64bit.
most of the times when i press power button(when my laptop is switch off or say shut down)the very "first screen" which shows hp logo, intel logo and phoenix logo along with press del and press f..... options remains for too long and i mean too long i.e. nearly 160 seconds.
but this problem occurs 8 outta 10 times.
and whenever this problem occurs , cd rom icon from "my computer" window disappears and thus i cant use my cd/dvd rom.
bt when on switching on the "first screen" shows for a fraction of a second then everything works fine and cd/dvd rom appears in "my computer" window.
i thought that there might be some problem in my hdd so i did a factory reset(i.e. recovery) bt to my disappointment nothing went right.
the problem exists as it happened to be.
it is very irritating to sit in front of a black screen and do nothing for almost 4 minutes.
is there a solution to my problem?
so can i get help from someone?
plz help me im really p***** with this problem.

thanks in advance

Hi narakputra. Go to this link http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/151819-boot-up-time.html and download the zip file and then extract it and run it.

Once its back at the desktop take a screenshot and post here (this is good for you to have a reference)

Next download and run the .reg file from http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/70567-shutdown.html?ltr=S and then click the link in my sig and download the utilities.zip under step 3 and run each shortcut one after the other. This will take a few hours to complete but once done run the reboot script again and see what your time is.

I have to come in and say I am jealous of your Boot Time.

I ran that script the other day (two days ago) and my reboot time hit at about 7250 seconds. Yes, 7 THOUSAND. WHY!?!?!?!?

This may or may not be related to my issue of freezing/bsoding randomly. I am at my wits end with it, and have decided to scrap Vista and us the Seven RC for now.

Any help for me?

Hi Lordbob,

Dont be tempted by the power of the dark side or as its better known, Windows 7. Its basically Vista with a bigger taskbar lol.

My advice to you would be to reinstall vista as if your expereincing bsod, freezes and a 7250 second reboot time then it will take less time just to reinstall it than to track down the problems. Make sure you do a full format then install Vista and only install your security software. Once thats done click the link in my sig and do every step there. That ensures Vista is up to date and theres no problems with your RAM and HDD.

Following my little guide takes time but it's worh it. Once thats complete install your programmes and things like flash, java etc. plus IE privacy Keeper and Tune Up then move any data like pictures and movies into vista. You now have everything you want in Vista so its time to clean up some trash. Delete all the installers you used then type prefetch in the vista start orb search bar and hit enter then select all files and delete them. Then run IE privacy Keeper and tick every box under all the tabs and then click Clean Up Now. Next run Tune Up Utilities and use the Free Up Disk Space and Clean Up Windows tabs. Then run the the utilities from the utilities.zip again. Finally open Tune Up Utilities again and go to the Increase Performance tab and use the registry dfrag. That will cause your pc to reboot so it can defrag the registry.

Note that when your using the cleaners and registry cleaner tick every box it gives you as your just setting up your pc and so no data you need will be deleted. Thats your pc now set up and ready to use. Run the reboot script and you should have a decent time appear. But it can get better. I'l post a list of tweaks later on that help to speed up boot time.

Tips:

Dont install anything by google, itunes, any toolbar for your browser and dont install cCleaner or any other cleaner other than the ones iv listed above.

Hi stew2
I followed all ur instructions but nothing happened.
I din took the screenshots bt before following the instructions the time was 196 secs and after following it was 180 seconds.

But i dont think doing all this will improve my boot time coz the problem is still there even i have formatted my computer after this problem occured.

but the problem is still there and i have followed many a steps to remove it,
updated bios
have sp1 for vista
upgraded ram to 2 gb
did all the defragmentation and all kind of stuff.
i use bit defender that 2 fully updated.
earlier i used kaspersky.

but that doesnt relates to my problem anyway.
there must be any other thing which is causing the real problem.
huh, im really disappointed with my laptop.

plz help me
this problem is really frustating me

Hi narakputra,

Click this link Performance Updates and do everything it says there. It will take some time and remeber to not use your laptop when its running the defrag shortcuts.

To update your drivers turn over your laptop and on the bottom on a white sticker it will say something like hp pavilion 95555. To update your drivers just go to the manafacturers website and then go to support and look for drivers for your model number. If your unsure then just ask here and i'l help.

Once youve done everything in that link apply the tweaks at this link http://www.vistax64.com/windows-updates/225414-performance-tweaks.html

Stew, the problem here is more that I think it is a hardware problem. I had Windows Seven beta on the same computer, with the same issue. My friend thought bad timings or CPU settings, but they look normal to me.

Also, I happen to like Windows Seven, don't know why you don't like it. Have you tried it?

Anyways, no desire to get into an argument...

Any other ideas? How would I check for a hardware problem?
Also, my system is lagging like HELL, and it is really annoying. This is not just start up.

If its a hardware issue then you'll need to enter the bios at some point.

First you should open your pc case and remove all dust and route cables away neatly and make sure ram sticks etc are seated properly. Then put the side back on and start your pc and let it boot and then reboot and enter your bios.

If you tell me the exact ram sticks you have i can tell you voltages, timings etc for your pc.

EDIT: no i havent tried windows 7 because i dont like the idea of installing it then uninstalling it a few months later as it will stop working. In the 2 years i'v had vista installed, iv only reinstalled once and that was because my x1950 died on me and it was a last ditch attempt at rescuing my pc. But i didnt need to reinstall it if id just admitted defeat and gone and bought a new graphics card it would have been so much easier lol.

thanks for ur reply Stew2.
but u r not getting my problem.
my boot screen "does not" remains on that green windows bar.
it hangs on very first screen which shous HP logo Phoenix logo and esc option and f10 option.
some times my computer boots in normal time eg. 60 secs or around, but most of the times it hangs on that very first screen.
ive searched many posts relating slow boot, but they all hang on the second screen which shows green lines moving left to right(whatever u call that)
anyways i really thank u for ur effort to keep my laptop error free.

go to c:\windows\prefetch and copy all the files to a new folder on ur desktop, then delete all the files in c:\windows\prefetch, see if that solves ur problem.

If not, restore the prefetch folder with the backup.
