unable to remove media player from Vista

To my shock I learned from this forum it is not possible to remove Windows Media Player from my Vista Home Premium. Every time I insert a movie disc, Media Player starts and I get an immediate blue screen of death and the computer crashes and reboots. When I look for a solution on MS website there is an ad selling a third party program to "Fix Vista". This was a clean install of Vista. As always MS OS is a piece of crap. I need XP or Vista to run a few programs. Linux does not have a registry and so no registry corruption. Linux does not turn over control of the computer to the application so individual applications poorly written or incompatible programs do not crash the computer.

If I am wrong can anyone tell me how to remove Windows Media Player from Vista Home Premium.

The integration of Windows Media Player into the Vista operating system should by looked at by the Justice department because as far as I can tell media player is mostly an ad machine to sell users music and/or DVDs to create more
profit for MS.:roflmao:

Media player works perfectly well in a healthy system. Most likely you have a corrupted file - maybe a .DLL. Apart from a fresh install you can direct the filetypes that are now being opened by media player to another player. I recommend VLC ( Download VLC Media Player 1.0.0 - FileHippo.com ). All you need to do is install VLC and make it your default player. Then check in the filetype associations whether there are still a few loose video player ends and change those too.

PS: If you like Linux so much, why don't you use it and get rid of windows. Wouln't that be the easiest solution?

You could turn off autoplay or set autoplay to open VLC or whatever program you use. As much as I'm a fan of Linux (OpenSUSE in particular), integration of commonly used apps isn't a crime and is pretty smart when it comes to cattering to casual users. I don't understand how people use anything that comes with vista (mail, media player, move maker, etc...) but everyone has their preferences.

Thanks for the quick responses. I am using Linux Ubuntu but I built an HTPC with Vista because there were a number of programs, available only in windows, for music and movie libraries that integrate with XP and Vista Media Center. I also own two Sony multi disc changer players that work only with XP or Vista. Applications handling Media is more advanced in XP/Vista when it works.

I just installed Ubuntu 9.02 Linux on another computer and it immediately found and installed a network printer that XP and Vista cannot find even with software from the printer manufacturer. I am a heavy duty user of PCs but do not have much knowledge of networking.

It is a mystery to me why MS would write a program integrated into the OS that causes a crash and reboot. Why does MS hang on to a central registry that is so easliy corrupted. Think of the millions, perhaps billions of dollars spent on third party software (RegCure, etc) to fix the registry. Why write the OS so that it turns control of the computer over to running applications so that poorly written or incompatible programs bring not just the offending application down but brings down the entire computer. If this is not the case please enlighten me. I am a relative novice.

I only want to understand.:D

I don't think there is an easy answer to your question other than history. As you know, Linux and Apple made a completely different design. But the design principles of Windows are what they are because at some point in the dawn of Windows that seemed to be the right way to go. Now, of course, they are stuck with it because of all the legacy problems that a radical change would incur. But there is hope. I have seen some videos of MS design approaches for the future that might change all that - but it is a gigantic task to accomplish that - both on the software and on the hardware side. Maybe in a few years we will see better days.

Thanks whs!!! I very much appreciate your comments. I downloaded VLC and I get the identical crash and blue screen message but the blue screen closes too fast to read or capture. I looked for a log but could not find it. I googled and saw a comment that crash logs are not kept on local machine but sent automatically to MS. I did a completely clean install of Vista two days ago.

Do you have updated drivers? The fact you're crashing VLC and Media Player indicates there's nothing wrong with Media Player, but more then likely on either your hardware or drivers. I hate microsoft as much as the next guy, but it's here and never going anywhere, and because it's so well supported it will always be easier to do some stuff on windows, so it's not really necessary to inject your opinion of Linux being better (which I completely agree on) over and over again.

BTW, if you’re only using the vista box for media center, I suggest you check out
XBMC Media Center for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux

So it is not WMP itself but something that starts it. I suspect some corrupted .dll. Run SFC /SCANNOW in cmd (run as admin). Mabe it can fix it. NOTE: there is a blank in front of the slash (/).

thruthkid: You are right. I was the world's biggest supporter of MS at 3.1 or win95
(I can't remember which) but the registry thing drives me crazy. The application you pointed me to looks great so I will give it a try. thanks for the help. By the way to anyone who is interested the picture quality I am getting thru my computer for netflix watch instantly is great. I bought and returned a samsung dvd player that had the net watch instantly feature had very poor picture quality.

Yeah I actually had an Iraqi translator tell me about XBMC a while back. I'm all about anything to avoid windows media center

I just noticed you are in Iraq. We really appreciate what you guys are doing over there. I was in the army and in Berlin after WWII 1955-58. Thanks, again.

It's just what I do, I'd say war in the late 50s is much more interesting. So did you try whs's suggestion and scanning for a corrupt dll file? It'd be a shame for this round with windows to put the nail in the microsoft coffin for you. Worse case scenario, maybe the xbmc link would be enough to get your HTPC running linux and doing everything you wanted from windows. As long as you get what you want working that's all that matters

type cmd in the start menu and right click cmd.exe and run as administrator (why we have no sudo cmd in windows is beyond me)
