Hi,

For the last few days or so I have been having problems with Vista Home Premuim 64bit not shutting down properly or looging off. I click on shut down and then the computer will just hang for a about 5mins and then decide to shut off sometimes or if it does not then the only way I can get it to turn off is by holding the power button in, which I dont really like doing.

I have closed all programmes down by the clock on the task bar and the problem is still the same. Do you recommend trying a clean boot?

I really want to try and find out where this problem lies as I don't really want to go through another reinstall of Vista.

Any advice would be very helpful.

Thanks

I had the same problem and used the solution from "The Shadow"

The Shadow.
Another quick way to get Vista to shut down is to create a “Quick Shutdown” shortcut on your Vista desktop.
%windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -s -t 00 -f
copy and paste the above line into a new Desktop Shortcut and you’ll have your very own “Quick Shutdown” icon. Just click it to quickly shut down Vista.

To date I have not found a solution to the slow boot time (3-4 minutes) and decided just to read the Newspaper until fully loaded :)

I used to have the same problem. What version are you using?

Download CCleaner run it... clean it. and see if that helps. but if you're using Home basic upgrade.

I use Vista Premium service pack 2 and tried all the possible fixes suggested by other forum members. Some of the things I tried: changed Norton 360 to Zone Alarm Extreme Security, Ran Malwarebytes, CC Cleaner, Ad-Aware and Spybot-S&D, and ran system tools like PC help and tools. Furthermore, I checked on the "Windows BBS" and
"IT HP resource forum " all to no avail

Mine was doing the same adn was driving me crazy. I have Vista Home Premium 64.
I found out if would NOT, shut down programs so fast "click, clickety click"-- then quickly hit "shutdown" , it would shut down ok. Since then, I have been shutting down programs a bit slower before clicking shutdown and it has not hung up on shutdown --- since.
Maybe nothing to do with it at all... but sure worked for me. ;o)

Got the help file open (you have to unblock the .chm file in Properties...General tab).

Here's what it says:
Boot Logging

Process Monitor can log activity from a point very early in the boot process during the initialization of boot-start device drivers. Configure Process Monitor to log the next boot by selecting Enable Boot Logging from the Options menu. Process Monitor's driver will log activity at the next boot into a file in the %Windir% directory and will continue logging through the shutdown or until you run Process Monitor again. Thus, if you don't run Process Monitor during a boot session you will capture a trace of the entire boot to shutdown cycle.

When you run Process Monitor it looks to see if a previous boot log has been generated, and if so, asks you where you want to place the processed boot log output file. Process Monitor displays the trace after it has finished translating it. To see activity from the System process, which is the only process early in a boot, select Enable Advanced Output from the Options menu.

If you configure boot logging and the system crashes early in the boot you can deactivate boot logging by choosing the Last Known Good option from the Windows boot menu (which you access by pressing F8 during the boot).

Note: network events, which are based on ETW (Event Tracing for Windows), are not available in boot logs.
