Help Please. Can't browse for files in ANY program in Vista.

I'm running XP Premium Home x64 on a Dell XPS M1530.
Don't know what all specs y'all might need but I have 4.0 GB of Ram, and am running an Intel Core Duo CPU T8100 @2.10 GHZ processor.

Here's what's going on. When I try to browse for a file in any program on Vista, that program crashes. A few examples:

In iTunes, when I try to go to File > Add folder to library, iTunes crashes and I get this message "iTunes has stopped working, windows is searching for a solution" after a few seconds "iTunes has stopped working, A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

In uTorrent, if I right click on a torrent and click "open containing folder" it will open that containing folder but then immediately freeze and display the same error message above, only with "Windows Explorer has stopped working" instead of "itunes has stopped working".

In imgburn, when I try to add an iso file, I get the following error message "Access violation at address 6F164549 in module 'ieframe.dll'. Write of address 75D8F8BC."

If I just click on My Computer, I can navigate through all files and folders with no problem, it's only when I try to navigate through other programs that these problems occur.

I've never seen anything like this. The only things I've tried so far is googling the error message i get in imgburn, but that brought nothing. I also tried booting in safe mode and trying those programs again, but experienced the exact same results.

I've tried to provide as much info as possible. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

UPDATE: Okay, was trying random programs to see how bad the problem was and had these results:

Microsoft Word Processor crashes when I do File>Open

Notepad allows me to do File>Open then browse normally.

Photoshop allows me to do File>Open then browse normally.

Roxio Creator Premiere crashes when I click Add then Add Files.

I don't understand why Photoshop and Notepad will let me browse for files but nothing else will.

Have you tried doing a System Restore from Safe Mode?

Thank you for the response.

Just tried. The only restore point available is from 9am this morning. I don't see how that would help, since I've had the problem since then, but I tried anyway and got this error message "The Disk OS (C:) Has Errors." "Windows has detected file system corruption on OS (C:) You must check the disk for errors before it can be restored."

Tried to click "Check disk now" but it says it can't check while disk is in use, so I scheduled a check upon next start up. Rebooting now, just didn't want to lose this post in the process. Will update upon rebooting.

UPDATE: Just restarted and it didn't do any sort of check. ?? Also tried a full shut down, then powered back on. It still didn't run any sort of check.

No matter what I try, I can't get chkdsk to run. I've tried running it from the command prompt and scheduling the check from there but it didn't work. I've tried running it in safe mode but that didn't work either. Great, now I have another problem.
