How do I restore program files(x86) from windows.old?

Ive had the misfortune of having someone install a fresh install over my old copy of vista and now I need to restore everything from the old one..Ive got most everything except when i try to restore program files x86 it says access denied? help please! >.< thanks guys :)

you cant restore programs mate you'll have to reinstall them

Im not very knowledgeable with this kind of thing but I was able to move the program files directory from windows.old to replace my current program files and it worked. However when I try to move the x86 directory I get an access is denied. However, all my programs are useable but they have default icons.

well thats a new one on me mate ha ha ive no idea how all your programs are even running without reinstalling them , files and folders yeah their fine but programs??!! , ill leave this one to someone clever :zip:

What I need to know how to do is move the directory c:\windows.old\program files (x86) to take the place of my current one. However, when I try to do it in command prompt from the recovery cd it says acciss is denied, when I try to cut it and paste it it says I need permission lol..However..right now there are programs in those old files ive used and they work, just they dont show up in my program files on the start menu and on the desktop they all have those blank icons like windows doesnt recognize them.

I am working in another thread to figure out how to get my true admin account working but the tutorial provided doesnt seem to work for me so its becoming a process.


EDIT: I went into safe mode and cut and pasted it and it worked, all Icons are back to normal, all programs are fully functional. As far as I can tell anyway.
