First time poster, My apologies if this thread has been posted earlier, i have seen similar threads but have not found a resolution, windows vista home premium x32, i recently have been unable to add printers, each time i receive the same error msg- "Windows can't open Add Printer. The local print spooler is not running. Please restart the spooler or restart the machine." I have attempted to restart service in Admin mode through run_rt click run as admin, deleted all print drivers but all attempts have been unsuccessful, all attempts end in error 5- access denied although i am the admin on the system
any help would be much appreciated, thanks in advance

i have a canon pixma mp500 all in one printer

Thank you kindly for your help thus far, I have been unable to update the firmware as the error regarding "stopped print spooler" appears.
In regards to turning print services on, the Internet Printing client is turned on but I am unable to turn either the LPR Print Monitor or the LPD Print Service on.

Ok ...Tom ....Here is what i'd do .....

Unplug all printers .....

Delete "Uninstall" all printer drivers ..."all of them" ....

Run this .." Just click Fix-it" ...:

Fix printing problems by resetting the print spooler

Go to Canon site that i gave you ...:

Download the firmware ....follow the procedure until it asks you to plug-in

the printer so it can recognize .... Restart .....

Thank you again! I had already uninstalled all drivers, the results of running Microsoft FixIt was "This Microsoft Fix It failed to process."

There's no guarantee that an "upgrade" will fix any particular settings breakdown, mostly because the upgrade process aims to preserve what it finds in situ.

It's possible to diagnose everything, but you may have to do some fairly convoluted things to get there. I'd be interested in the results of the following:

- Run a CMD instance as admin (right-click the CMD shortcut, "Run as administrator...").
- Attempt to start the spooler service from there:

C:\Windows\system32>net start spooler
The Print Spooler service is starting.
The Print Spooler service was started successfully.

Assuming yours doesn't "start successfully", what's the exact error message? If it's a simple "access denied"...

- Run services.msc and check the properties of the spooler service. What account is it configured to run under?
- Have you ever used Process Monitor? If not, this is a good opportunity. You might want to download it (Process Monitor) and have a play. The aim is to generate a log of what the spoolsv.exe process does during its brief lifespan, assuming the process starts at all. Analysis of a ProcMon log may reveal the source of the "access denied" message.

H2SO4, your username brings back memories of working as a pharmaceutical chemist!
Thank you kindly for your help thus far!

I have run command prompt as an admin w/the following results;
moz-screenshot-2.png
System error 5 has occurred.
Access is denied.

Then running services.msc, there is no spooler service listed.

I downloaded the Process Monitor but do not really understand how to make heads/tails of the info.

Please advise, thanks again.

No problem. I like troubleshooting uncommon issues.

I have run command prompt as an admin w/the following results;
moz-screenshot-2.png
System error 5 has occurred.
Access is denied.

The image didn't attach successfully but I get the idea. The main goal right now is to figure out whether the spoolsv process even starts, or whether the Service Control Manager's (SCM) attempts to read spooler sevice config and initiate its startup meet with an unfortunate end even before the process starts.

Then running services.msc, there is no spooler service listed.

Are you quite sure it's not listed? I'd expect a different error in that case. The services.msc applet calls it the "Print Spooler" service. What do you get in response to this on a command prompt?

SC QUERYEX SPOOLER

I downloaded the Process Monitor but do not really understand how to make heads/tails of the info.

It's not particularly trivial but it can be very useful. If you're still keen I'll try to help you use ProcMon after I've got more info regarding the questions above (I need to know whether we're going to be monitoring spoolsv.exe or SCM itself.)

H2S04,
Sorry for my delayed response.
Print Spooler is in fact present when running services.msc.
When attempting to start Print Spooler the following error appears;

"Windows could not start the Print Spooler service on Local Computer
Error 5: Access is denied"

Then when entering SC QUERYEX SPOOLER in command prompt;

SERVICE_NAME: spooler
Type 10 Win32_own_process
State 1 Stopped
Win32 Exit Code 0 <0x0>
Service Exit Code 0 <0x0>
Checkpoint 0x0
Wait Hint 0x0
PID 0
Flags

Thanks for your help again!!

Any other ideas?

Nothing related is appearing in event viewer, when attempting to print I still get the message that i need to restart spooler or the machine but am unable to restart spooler even when trying to do so as admin, error message= Access is denied.
I have deleted all drivers and updated to no avail, I still cannot add printer as the spooler service is required to do so.
Any ideas?
Please help,
Thank you.

Did you check in services to see if the print spooler is disabled or set to manual ? I don't know if that would make a difference or not.

Thanks JimJoe,
The Print Spooler is set to Automatic and I am unable to start the service when I select Start, the resulting error is;
Windows could not start the Print Spooler service on Local Computer.
Error 5: Access is denied.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

hello
I don't want to step on any toe's here , but I was reading this problem and found (in another forum) what worked for another guy. so I copied it and will paste it here.......hope it helps!!

This is the help suggested from another page:

You can try the following steps:
Right click on start --- Left click on explore ---- Go to i386 folder from C
drive --- search for the file spoolsv --- Copy the file spoolsv and paste in
C:\windows\system32.

If you can find the file and complete these steps it should be able to be restarted.

Thank you for your suggestion Kenny, I was able to locate the spoolsv.exe file in system32 folder.
I did however realize i had earlier incorrectly posted that there were not any related errors in event viewer, the results are;
Unable to initialize the security package Kerberos for server side authentication. The data field contains the error number.
The Print Spooler service failed to start due to the following error:
Access is denied.
The Parallel port driver service failed to start due to the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

These 3 errors seem to appear regularly.
