Can my computer run Vista?

My basic PC specs are as follows:

Intel Pentium D 3.0 GHz
1GB RAM
128MB video memory
25GB hard disk partition (the rest of the space is for another OS)

I think Vista should run smoothly on such a system, but I'm not sure. If the 1GB of RAM isn't enough, that's no cause for worry; I have an extra 512 MB RAM stick with me to spare (I removed it sometime ago because I felt I didn't need it.)
Remember: I won't be running four-five apps at a time, I'm not like that, all I'll want to run will be some apps like a Nintendo64 emulator, a simple programming language, and such. What's more, I won't be installing too many apps because I'll have another Linux OS as a dual-boot with Vista, and I'll be installing the office suite and web browser on that, not on Vista. So I don't think the small Vista partition will be a serious problem.
So, what do you think? Can I run Vista smoothly?

If I were you i would run the upgrade advisor. I have vista running on a very similar box (more video memory) and it runs fine. In fact I dual boot vista and ubuntu, with no problems

I may be getting my nose where it doesn't belong but, I gotta ask... have you checked Windows 7 as your OS? it runs with less resources than Vista and it is more compatible with other software... at least for me and on my computer it does (I run both).

I have to specify that I run the x64 version and not the 32 bit version though... it should make no difference I think.

yes, 25gb hard drive space and 1 gig of ram won't be enough to run vista efficiently. as jblim said, get AT LEAST 1 more gig a ram and free some more space on that hdd. you need 16 gig for vista, and 10 gb won't be enough for all your files.
hope this helps,

Dom

I may be getting my nose where it doesn't belong but, I gotta ask... have you checked Windows 7 as your OS? it runs with less resources than Vista and it is more compatible with other software... at least for me and on my computer it does (I run both).

I know about Windows 7 and how it's more resource-efficient, but... I have some personal reasons I don't want to use it. Vista seems pretty cool, although quite a resource hog and a stranger to many apps. Currently I'm decided on Vista.
And anyway, if I upgrade my RAM to 1.5GB (as I said before, I have an extra RAM stick to spare) will it be fine? And remember: Windows Vista is not going to be my only OS; thus less software will be installed on it so a shortage of disk space is not an issue. The only things that really matter are RAM and video memory.

Not 1.5GBs of RAM but 2GBs are required. RAM is so cheap, just get a new set. And 25GBs of disk space will be extremely tight. You better free up at least 40GBs.

Well, I guess the only way to see if it runs smoothly is to try it out. I won't do it now, because a new version of openSUSE Linux, version 11.2, will be released in mid-November, which I plan to dual boot with Vista. If all goes fine, and Vista runs smoothly on my system, then I'll know whether to upgrade my system or not.
I'll try to post the results here in the forum when I've tried it.

Don't bother. Build a new pc with Win 7. Old machines should be retired permanently.
