Fix MBR - no access to bios

Hi. I thought I would try Ubuntu on my computer. I have a Microsoft Wireless keyboard and mouse. They both worked while setting up dual boot.

Once completed, Ubuntu loaded, however I didn't have a keyboard and mouse to select the operating system. They worked well once in Ubuntu. I changed the boot OS default to Vista 64 and I have access to Vista again.

The problem is that no keyboard I try allows me access to the bios. I've tried unplugging the drives as well, still with no luck. I want to repair Vista (MBR)using the disk, however can't change the boot order in the bios.

Is there a way to repair MBR from within Vista? Any other suggestions?

There is no way to change it from within Vista.

With this said I know your problem.

Most USB ports/motherboard combinations don't give off power during boot-up (only when loading OS they start to work).

You need to get a-hold of a ps-2 connection keyboard. (Circular, prongs, green on the end). This should solve your problem because they do get power during boot-up.

The green one is the one you are looking for.

You can pick up one of these at a local electronics store for around $10.00.

I know my sentences aren't exactly clear but please try to follow them the best you can! Let me know if this works or not.

Thanks. I had a ps2 keyboard and tried it. No luck. Finally reset the motherboard and it picked up the keyboard. Was able to access bios, use vista disk to /fixmbr. Ubuntu is gone for now. Someday, I'll try it again...lol Thanks for the help.

Yeah, no problem. May I ask how you 'reset' the Motherboard though.

Ubuntu will not make changes to the BIOS...nor will any other OS...

What you experienced was a coinkydink.

You may want to replace the battery...Part# CR 2032.

I agree. I've never known an op system that did. It was one of the weirdest "coinkydinks" I've ever seen. The battery is relatively new as is the motherboard but I'll take your advice and change it out anyway.

Thanks for the suggestion.
