Vista log on not working

Hello folks. I am ne to the form and need some help with me sons Dell 1525 laptop. I am not the best at this so here goes. We can not log in upon start up. The screen says access denied. I have tried to reboot in safe mode with no luck. I tryed system restore but can not get to it. The computer is less than a 1 1/2 old and Dell is no help. He has his school work on here and we need to retreive it.

When this all started, my sone was on youtube and it just locked up? Maybe a virus? Please please help! Thanks, Ken

Is your son the only user on the computer? when he was able to log in was he a regular user or administrator?

Do you guys have the dvd/cd's that came with the computer? what changed to prevent him from logging on? did he change something? download something? Is there a working anti virus on the machine?

Yes he was the only user. And signed on as a regular user. I have the disk Dell provided...operating system already installed on your computer....He was looking at songs vids on the laptop on youtube

Since you cant logon, cant boot into safe mode, your next option would be to restore a backup if you have one. If you can try to boot from the OS dvd, and see if it shows you a restore my system. If you dont have a back up your options are running out. You can also boot from the OS dvd and to a repair install.

No do not have a back up but i need to get the comp running I am willing to try anything...I will accept losing what little is on the computer

i looked at the link thanks...but pardon my stupidity...If i can not get passed to password and in safemode I can't load the dvd..where do I go from here? In another post I read, some one said to start in selective mode with prompts..than enter net user username* then hit enter twice....this would remove the password....is there another way to remove the password so I can get into the programs? confused I am!

Put the dvd in the dvd player and boot with it there. A prompt will come up saying push any key to boot from the dvd. push. then the dvd should load.

Hang on one Just got another idea

OK I got it. when booting from dvd push shift-F10 and a cmd prompt will open. look here for instructions Open a CMD Window During the Vista Installation . then right click the cmd and run as admin> type net user administrator /active:yes

reboot

should be an administrator account with no password. you can use this account to change the other account password and check for virus'

this is a bit cobbled but I just tried it and it works. If it doesn't work on yours let me know

I can get into safe mode..sorry I ahve to shut donw a few times but I do get the screen to come up...can I do something from there?

It says loading windows files...screen goes black...logo pops then asks for password...I type it in and it takes a few min for screen to come up

YES

boot into safe mode with command prompt. right click and run as admin>type the following net user administrator /active:yes
reboot
log on as administrator (no password should be needed) and change the password on the other account

Let me know if it doesnt work

REBOOT

Log on as administrator (no password) and go to users control panel. change the other account password

To turn off administrator type netuser administrator active: no

Tried it and the screen now says "your account has been disabled. See your system administrator" This is frustrating
