Hi, not sure if this is the right forum but whatev

I just recently got a new computer installed with the Vista Home Premium x64 OS. After many failed attempts at transferring my old files i eventually ended up putting my old hard drive into my new computer, and attempted to drag and drop into a folder i created specifically for those files.

Upon trying to do this, it transferred all of my program files, but when it gets to my actual documents, where i keep my most important files, it says i need administrative permission to do this.

Then, when i tried to access the files directly in my old hard drive, it said that i couldn't do that, and showed this:

"You don't currently have permission to access this folder. Click continue to get access to this folder."

"You have been denied permision to access this folder. To gain access to this folder you will need to use the security tab."

and then when i use the security tab to transfer file permission to me, it still doesn't do anything.

any help please?

When you are going to "open" up the folder that is on your old HDD. Right click on it and click "Run as administrator." This should allow you full access to the files and able to transfer them without any problems.

Oh, "Run as administrator" is only for programs. Sorry bout that.

EDIT: I found some Information that might be helpful if you feel comfortable using the Windows Command...

"To fix this, you can follow these steps:

- Click Start
- Type: cmd
- Right-click cmd when it appears
- Click Run As Administrator
- Change location to the folder you need access to (e.g. cd e:\folder)
- Type: takeown /F . /R /A /D Y > NUL
- Type: icacls . /grant USER:(OI)(CI)(F) /L /T /Q
(Where USER is your username - you will only have access from your
XP and Vista machine in this case)
(Or, replace USER with Users if you want anyone [on any computer
your hard drive is plugged into] to have full access to these files)"

Information found here.

Let me know how you feel about this, if you aren't comfortable with it just post some more about what you need help with and maybe I can clarify some things.

Better yet, put the hard drive in a desktop enclosure for $30.
