Just how long will MS support Vista?

I run Vista HP & I have it up & running just fine on my laptop. It will cost me at least £70 to upgrade to Win 7 & the process will almost certainly take several hours. Plus I am sure I won't be able to run certain apps on '7'. SeaMonkey 2.0 doesn't work well on it from what I have been told & K-Meleon almost certainly won't run on '7'. I have no back-up computer online (my old computer may be soon) & if anything goes wrong with the upgrade the loss of files &/or Internet connectivity would be VERY inconvenient for me.

I am thinking of buying a new laptop sometime next year anyway (probably later in the year than sooner) & will buy '7' pre-installed.

I honestly don't know how many people will bother to upgrade from Vista & I suspect many will just wait until they purchase another machine. I must say that Vista has always seemed fine to me & I know MS have tried their best with the service packs & updates. I still prefer it to XP.

Does anyone know just how long that Microsoft will support Vista until they inevitably consign it to the waste basket?

Much more than a year. btw seamonkey runs k-meleon (?) dont know it. they supported XP for 3 years after the last SP, so you have nothing to worry about for at least a year.

Well, if they support it for at least three years that might be ok, otherwise I can see me switching to Ubuntu!

The SeaMonkey® Project

K-Meleon

SeaMonkey & K-Meleon are both open source Mozilla-based browsers. I am using SeaMonkey 2.0 RC2 at the moment. The final stable release will be at the end of this month.

Microsoft's support road map currently says that extended support for Windows XP ends in April 2014. You need to be on the latest service pack within one year of its release for continued support, which at this point means you must be running XP Service Pack 2.

obviously this now applies to sp3 too but the 2014 date is still the same

so i woukdnt start worrying about them not supporting vista for a while yet ;)

OK cheers! :D

Of course, XP is very widely used, especially in business & education etc. Vista was never as widespread & it would cost a lot for many firms, colleges, schools etc to switch to Win 7 from XP (as much in time & effort as cost).

I am just worried that MS will drop Vista support quickly thus forcing people to upgrade or switch to Linux or Mac.

i expect they would drop it in a second if they could ;) , but i think theres legal issues prventing them from doing so , kinda like if a UK manufacturer makes a new car they have to supply parts for that car for at least 10 years

Well, I hope you're right. I like to wait for a while before I jump to any new decisions or purchases with Microsoft. I still don't think that Vista turned out that bad in the end anyway.

90 day trial? Do you load it ino your PC then after 90 days it self-destructs Mission Impossible style? :roflmao:

Sorry, I am sure that Win 7 is far better than Vista but it will be such a rigmarole for me to upgrade I don't think that it's worth it. My computer is working fine. When I buy a new laptop I will have it then.

after 90 days it shuts down EVERY hour , which will get a little annoying :p , unless of course you purchase a key , i wont be running the Enterprise version anyway its not worth the extra cash for me.

Im a gamer so i never really buy new i just upgrade , its not major a hassle for me to reformat although i do hate doing it , im running 7 on a seperate partition right now
