How many processes should be running in my task bar?

Right now I have 52, CPU usage hovers around 5-15, phisical memory 21%.
I have 2 terabites of memory, mostly music software for composition.
1 terabite is being used, theres still well over 500 gigs of free space.

I have like 13 svchose.exes running, 6 avgs, and a bunch of other crap Ive never heard of. Searching these in google doenst really do anything, I mean it tells me what it is kind of, but Im still afraid to mess with it. If this computer goes I'm ruined. I dont want to uninstall anyting or make a music application not run for some reason.
I've ran spybot and avg full edition, encase it was a spyware issue.

Would taking it in to a PC shop solve the problem? Or will they remove something valuable, accidentally.

Perfomance is still excellent, but 52 processes, damn.

52 is alright for Vista. It's the average amount of process most people have.

I also have an Asus G53SW-A1
On a good day I can get down to 48 unless I actually want to do anything besides look at it. In XP I called it a good day if I had 29 running, but I keep mine leaner than most people.

Also be careful not to confuse disk storage space - the terrabytes you mentioned - with memory. Your RAM memory is probably 2 to 4 gigabytes and is in chips plugged into your motherboard. Disk space is not called memory. Memory is where the active services are running and that memory is what 21% of is being used. More memory makes your machine go zoom zoom.

I depends entirely on what you use your computer for. Be sure and check it while there are no applications open because they will all have their respective services loaded.

If you view them with process explorer (from sysinternals) you can click on any one and Google it. You have to decide if it's something you need. You can't kill any processes related to your firewall, or your sound and video, for instance. But do you need Adobe speed launcher? I don't, so I go to administrative services and set it to manual load. Do you need ipod thingamajig or iTunes helper? No? Sometimes? I see no need to keep itunes sucking on my resources, so I set it to manual. If I open itunes it will force the helper to load anyway and it will only be slower to finish opening.I set some to manual load, and I disable others.

Those are just examples. If you can't find it, use Autoruns from Sysinternals to find and change their settings. You just have to learn your own machine and what you need.

+ 1

A lot of apps like to add unnecessary rubbish at start up.

Without knowing what you have installed, it's probably safe to say you could probably cull that by about 10 with no negative impact.
