Nothing to the system, it just wont use it. Just a waste of money that could be put to better use some where else on your PC.

As in your computer has 2GB installed but your running 3GB of applications in the memory? The computer has a system file name pagefile.sys this file uses the hard drive space as ram so the computer can continue working without freezing. But if your constantly using the pagefile, definitely need to invest in more RAM.
