Solved Appreciate your help - All zip files have IE icons

This is my first time posting here. I searched the forum for an answer and became confused as to what answer might apply to my question. So, I appologize in advance if this question is redundant and/or placed in the incorrect section of the forum. I'm not sure if my problem is a file association problem, related to compressed folders, or a problem with Vista, or something else.

This is what's going on....

All of my zip files suddenly have Internet Explorer icons, but (right-click) "properties" still shows that the files are .zip files.

There is no 'Extract' option available when I right click on one of these files.

If I left click on one of these zip files, IE windows start opening and closing non-stop until I hit the on/off button and turn my computer off.

I don't know how IE got associated as the program to open my .zip files. At least I am assuming that is what has happened given that all my zip files have IE icons now.

The only thing that I can think of that may have caused this is when my husband tried to open a regular 'folder' (not a zip file) using the 'open with' option and he then selected MS Works to open the folder (he's not so computer savvy). After that little mistake this all started with my zip files. Don't know if it's related to the problem or not.

I sure would appreciate your help to get this fixed. Below are my computer details. Let me know if you need more details.

Laptop = HP Pavilian dv7-2177cl
Vista Home Premium x64bit
IE 8

Hi Shawn,

Thanks for the fast response. I downloaded the file to my desktop 'Default_ZIP'
The next step is to open it. Typically, I would open a zip file be extracting it (right click--Extract), but the only options I have when I right click on this file are the ones below:

Merge
Edit
Print
Open With

I'm a bit confused as to how to open this file so I can extract the .reg file to the desktop.

Thanks again for your help!

EDIT: I just noticed that this file opens with the Registry Editor (not a zip file), so I believe that I should double click to open it...correct? I'll wait to hear back from you so I don't do something stupid, lol.

WinXP and Vista will open a zip file when you double click the file.

You can drag and drop the reg file outside the zip file, this places a copy where you dragged the file to. Then double click on it. The change/fix will then take place.

That is all there is to it.

Thank you for your response, but the confusion is that the file I downloaded is not a zip file, it's a .reg file.

Here, let me try to explain what I'm seeing....

The file I downloaded from here (I clicked on the ZIP link):
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/233243-default-file-type-associations-restore.html is named 'Default_ZIP' and it's a .reg file NOT a .zip file. It's properties show that it opens with the Registry Editor.

BUT, the instructions say:

Click on the file extension type link listed below for the one that you wish to restore to default to download it's .zip file. (that's where I selected the ZIP link and downloaded the file entitled 'Default_ZIP')

Save the .zip file to your desktop

Open the .zip file, then extract the .reg file to the desktop

Right click on the .reg file and click on Merge
(there's a couple more steps, but for this discussion, I don't need to include them)

This is where the confusion is coming from......

The file didn't download as a zip file....it's a .reg file. I can't "open the .zip file" as the instructions say, and I can't "extract the .reg file to the desktop", etc. as per the instructions. Are the instructions incorrect?

_______
Also, please note that my original problem is that all of my zip files have IE icons and can not be extracted. If I download a zip file, I think it would take on the IE icon also and I would not be able to extract it.

Thank you for your help and your patience!

Since the file that downloaded was a .reg file rather than a .zip file, should I assume that I should just jump ahead in the instructions to the step that says "Right click on the .reg file and click on Merge"?

Cheyenne,

Yes it's a reg file for the Default_ZIP download. You would either select Merge in the right click context menu, or double click on it to do the same. :)

I couldn't place that one in ZIP file since it is to fix ZIP file associations. If it was in a ZIP and your ZIP files were messed up, you wouldn't have been able to open the ZIP to fix it. What a tongue twister. ;)

Shawn,

Thank you so much! I went ahead and followed the instructions from "merge" on and it worked like a charm! No more frustration, lol.

This is a wonderful forum. I've been browsing around reading quite a bit today.

Thanks for all the help and patience you all have shown me getting this little "situation" taken care of!
