Hello,

Computer - Sony Vaio
OS - Vista

I cannot do a system restore from safe mode and hence accessed through pressing F10 (Recovery center). I selected system restore and it has been running for 2 hours.
The system restore pop up window states "Finalizing file restore" and its been there for 2 hours.
Please advise as to how long I might need to wait.

Hello Raguchak,
It does sound like a long time for system restore to do its thing.
I don't think you are going to be lucky enough for this to finish, it can sit there for hours on end doing nothing.
Can you tell us what prompted the restore, there is not a lot that cant be fixed on Vista, so, if you tell us the problem that prompted the restore, we may be able to help.

Thanks for your response and assistance.
I had to install service pack on my laptop as I was getting frequent alerts. After I installed it my laptop rebooted and got stuck at one place
712/6514 (audiodepthconverter.ax)
I have tried rebooting but it reloads all previous files and stops at this same file each time. I can't get into safe mode to uninstall this update and without getting past this file I am unable to gain access to any account rendering it useless.
i do not have a recovery/backup CD.
1. I tried system restore and again my laptop was hanging for 3 hours (On the pop-up system restore window it stated finalizing file restore)
2. So my next option was to rescue data using an external drive
3. Restore restore C: drive.

Please advise if you can offer any other options.

When rebooting press F8, this will take you to a recovery screen, choose "last known good configuration", there are other options, but I'm guessing you will have tried most of them.
