Change Shortcut Icon of a directory in Vista

If you want to do what I want to do as the subject said, you DO NOT do this:

"click & hold mouse left button while on the target directory & press CTRL+ALT, then release left mouse button"

Ya, I know this works with previous Windows system. But in Vista, this seems create a "restricted" shortcut & you can never find a shortcut tab in properties dialog.

Instead, you SHOULD do this:

Copy the full path of your target directory & click right button on Desktop background, then choose shortcut, when it asks you the target to shortcut, paste the full path of your target path you copied just now & press ok. This will create a "general" shortcut & now you can find that shortcut tab in properties dialog.

Hope this helps people! :)

Thanks, Richc46. I got help from others & I help others while I can. I believe a lot of people are just like me.

There's another experience to share:

I think people may said:"This helps me. But this operation could annoy me if I got lots, lots of shortcuts to do...".

Ok, this is how I handle this emotion:

I always make the taskbar on the bottom of screen & pull it up to twice of default height. Then I adjust it to align "quickstart bar" on top row & taskbar in 2nd row (thanks to MAC OSX GUI style:)) . When I create a general shortcut on desktop (called it agent shortcut), I drag it to quickstart icon & Vista will copy it to quickstart bar itself.

If I want to do 2nd shortcut, I copy the full path of 2nd target directory & open properties dialog of agent shortcut, paste the path I copied & click ok. Then I rename the agent shortcut to appropriate name. Repeat the dragging process & you got 2nd shortcut in quickstar bar.

In this way, you can lessen the annoying feeling a bit or a lot, depending on your emotional characteristic:p

You can leave agent shortcut there, like me or dispose it to recycle bin, if you are kinda Clean-desktop OCD type ^^".
