Vista home basic 32bit sleep problem

greeting,

My computer is not sleeping properely, when I go to bed at night i put the computer to sleep. When I wake up it is already awake. Nobody else lives with me so that is ruled out. When I first got the computer from dell a few years ago, I noticed a error with the sleep feature it would turn on and off many times, this was before I had hooked it up to the internet. Anyhow that issue seems to have went away when I called dell and they came out to fix it. the coumputer was sleeping fine, so I do not understand what I may of did to it. I do have VOIP phone but I have checked that asap after the computer was in sleep mode and I still have dialtone. I thought it might be virus scanner but it was shut off last night and the same issue. I just went and figured out how to fix the hibernation feature since it was deleted and will see if that feature works instead, but if you have any comments please add. My computer is up to date with all the updates minus IE9 beta.

The only thing I can suggest is to check each STEP section in the tutorial link above to see if it may be able to help you find the culprit.

I have always found the tut on sleep to be very helpful and the causes that it gives are usually correct.
You say it does not work, so lets go with this
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
Maybe some start up program is the cause; anti virus etc.
Its a long shot but lets try
Some task that is being performed when the computer is not being used, perhaps.

also
Disconnect from the internet. That NIC is a big cause of this problem.

It is wise that you asked. You should not disable any service unless you are familiar with the nature of the service

If you decide to disable just click on disable all.

strange that I do not have a sure thing cd labeler program on my computer. I have found out that the sleep problem is related to my vonage VOIP box. Im unsure how to correct this error and there tech support seemed unsure of it to, saying they have not had complaints of such issue. he said something about disabling my lan on wakeup or somthing of another in which he could not tell me how to do.

oh the sure thing labeler is from my roxio dvd burning program... I wonder why it is stopped anyhow tah tah

hello I have found out that it is my vonage VOIP box causing my sleep problem. I am currently having a argument with there tech support cause the box does not require my computer to be on to work, therefor I think it should not have to cause this problem.. anyone have any sugestions as to this technology vonage is taking awhile to figure this out telling me to reset the box or that its supposed to do that. blah blah.

If i am reading the pic you uploaded the wake is occurring from a USB root hub device which could be associated to a device that is connected by a USB port such as a printer.

You really need to go into device manager as described in the tutorial i posted & go through them one by one to check that they are not set to wake computer under the power management tab

Capture1.JPG

Just so you can rule them out check your mouse & keyboard while you are in Device Manager

so I somewhat resolved the problem but disconnecting the usb printer did not do it, still wakes up from sleep, in fact it would still be giveing me a issue but if I seem to log off of the computer it will stay in sleep mode. any clues to this? if not Im not going to worry about it any longer. cept that prolly wont happen cause now I''ll think about it every time I log off instead of pushing the button. lovely

Hello bmarker, i am sorry you have still not resolved this issue. I have had sleep mode issues myself and spent weeks trying to resolve it.

At the end of the day i could bounce suggestions off you for weeks but sleep mode problems can be caused by so many different things from one computer to the next, it is really a process of elimination.

The best resource if you wish to continue trying to resolve this is the tutorial posted by Brink if nothing works in the tutorial you then need to start reading the posts following the tutorial (a lot of heavy reading) in these posts there is a lot of tips that have worked for others.

In my case it took around six weeks of research & working trough eliminating in the end mine was a Ram issue.

I think your problem is not a major issue as it is just a case of the computer waking but it could be any number of things like software checking for an update to a scheduled task.

Please post back if you have further questions but as i say i can only keep bouncing suggestions off you but am only to willing to keep trying if you wish to pursue it further :)

Edit: sudden afterthought & going back to Device Manager this is another common cause is these wake options on your Network Driver
