Solved vista icons missing in the "open file" boxes

Hi I have a weird problem.

I'm using vista 64 bit and the thumbnail icons used in the "open file" diagoloue boxes for programs such as word and firefox are missing. It shows up as the unknown file icon. I have tried to rebuild the vista icon cache and that didn't work. All the other icons, the ones on the desktop are fine.

When I try to go into properties to change the icons, it shows the pictures, but doesn't actually change. Also, the little shortcut arrow displays as an unknown file icon. So I have normal icons with a "unknown file" icon in the lower right corner where the shortcut arrow should be.

Can anyone help?

Hello and welcome to the forum, do you know how long this has been going on and have you tried to do a system restore. If you know when you first noticed this you can go back at least 5 days before and do a restore.

I would also run a full AV scan.
Plus download malwarebytes and run a full scan, this way you can rule out any thing such as a virus or malware. Virus's can start small as I am sure you are well aware of.

re: vista icons missing in the "open file" boxes

I do not recommend this for any use but this case only and what you do to your computer is at your own risk

If it is any Icon Related or Cache Related problem you may want to try and Clean the Registry as this usually works for me BUT Please do not use this on a regular basis as this can cause harm to your computer if used wrongly

Please download and Run Ccleaner and Run a Registry Clean

See Piriform - Download CCleaner, Defraggler, Recuva, Speccy - Millions of users worldwide! For More Information

Many Thanks,
Josh
