massive problems

for awhile now I have had problems with my system crashing and needing 2-3 attempts to boot. Also when running it would say there was a problem with different programs and close them. yesterday I got infected with the bogus vista antivirus tool and now it's like my operating system won't run at all. I can download programs or files but I can't run them. when I try to run even basic programs a window pops up and asks which program do I want to open the file with. Help me!

I should also say that I had previously tried to fix the problem by running restore in both regular and safe modes. I have also run Malwarebites, AVG and other spyware, malware and antivirus tools in both modes without success. Now I can't even get restore to come up. I just get file not found.

When you were able to log into safe mode with tools did you use to try and repair the system...

Do you have the full store software of vista...

Do you have the factory recovery disk's...

Another possibility if you have a friend or family member you can make yourselve the recovery, here is how...

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/141820-create-recovery-disc.html

Here are some other options on doing a system restore:

If you have the system recovery disks or the full version then there are other options...

This is a Gateway M#GT5692 about 4 years old running Vista x64
I can't access very many programs. When I go to the programs menu at start it is empty. it seems that all I have is what was on my desktop. Anything else that wasn't there won't load and of course my Malwarebytes and AVG won't either. If I attempt to open a program a window pops up asking which program I want to open the file with and it has only the programs from the desktop to choose from. Restore will not load it says file not found. When I download something to desktop it won't appear there and won't run when I chose run option. Creating a recovery disk doesn't seem an option at this point. I can access the internet by first using windows update to connect and then searching from there.
