'Side-by-side configuration is incorrect' message.

Hello,

I've searched so many times on the internet about this I've lost count. I have been on every website possible and I still can't find a solution. Everytime I click on my Samsung New PC Studio or my AVG software, I keep getting this message: "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application log for more detail". I've tried numerous things, including going on Command Prompt, System Restore and I've tried downloading various packages but I still cannot find a solution to this problem. I've been trying to solve this all day but I've had no luck.

Please help,

Charl

Hello, and welcome to the Vista Forums!

There are very many subtypes of "Side by Side configuration" errors, and so at this point in time, I cannot give you any idea of how complicated this is going to be, or even if it is possible to fix. So I must take some logs.

"Samsung New PC Studio or my AVG software"

Are they the only two programs which do this? This isn't good news, actually. It hints at a subtype which is nigh on impossible to fix without a Clean Install.

1: Get two/three different programs which all generate this error message lined up ready to run "Samsung New PC Studio or my AVG software".

2: Open an elevated Command Prompt. Elevated Command Prompt

3: Type sxstrace trace -logfile:sxstrace.etl into the Command Prompt window, and press enter ONCE! Set it continue to log!

4: Start the first program. Let it generate the error message, and OK out of the error message. Once the program has closed, start the next program. Once this one has closed, start the last one. Make sure that all three generate an error. I need you to make absolutely sure that you do not run programs that work while logging!

5: Go back to the Command Prompt and press enter again to end the logging.

6: Type sxstrace parse -logfile:sxstrace.etl -outfile:%userprofile%\Desktop\sxstrace.txt and press enter.

Upload the file sxstrace.txt from your Desktop.

This canned speech is courtesy of Jacee. Give the credit entirely to her!

Please download VEW by Vino Rosso http://images.malwareremoval.com/vino/VEW.exe from here and save it to your Desktop.

Double click it to start it. Note: If running Windows Vista or Windows 7 you will need to right click the file and select Run as administrator and click Continue or Allow at the User Account Control Prompt.

Click the check boxes next to Application and System located under Select log to query on the upper left

Under Select type to list on the right click the boxes next to Critical, Error and Warning and Information.

Under Number or date of events select Number of events and type 20 in the box next to 1 to 20 and click Run

Summary: Check all six check boxes, choose a number of reports, and set it to 20.

Once it finishes it will display a log file in notepad. Ideally, upload it, but pasting it between CODE tags is also fine.

Then please copy the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\ folder to your Desktop, right click on it > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder, and upload that here as well.

Please remember to post sxstrace.txt, your Event Log, and CBS.zip!

The very best of luck!

Richard

Thanks a lot for this niemiro, once I get onto my computer I will have a go of the things you have mentioned (as I am currently on my mum's laptop) (: I will let you know what happens!

My Computer

And just to confirm, it is just my Samsung PC Studio and my AVG software that won't load and get this message. How weird! But obviously my AVG software is really important and vital so I need to try and get this fixed otherwise it'll be a new laptop on the cards. I've just got onto my laptop so I'm just about to try your suggestions (:

My Computer

Thanks a lot for this but unfortunately it hasn't worked ): Is there anything else I could do or do you think it's time to give up?

Hello!

Unfortunately, I cannot help you unless you upload your logs.

I have given you instructions above. Can you *please upload the logs (sxstrace.txt, CBS.log, and your Event Log) as I showed you above.

Thanks a lot!

Richard

Hello!

No problem!

Have you been able to follow these instructions? These will generate the sxstrace.txt file.

Alternatively, is there someone who knows their way around a computer in your family?

Thanks a lot!

Richard

Well I'm the person who's the best with computers in my family unfortunately haha! But I've just managed to upload the file which is great! Now going onto the next step....I clicked on the file to download it but it says it may harm my computer? Are you sure I can trust this?

My Computer

Right so I decided to go for it and download it...and I've tried to save it 3 times....and I've searched my whole computer 3 times for it but its not anywhere. It won't save. What should I do?

EDIT: Tried even more times to save it and it just wont.
