Google tells me this is a common issue, and directs me to people with similar issues, but haven’t found anyone with my specific (unique?) problem.
Several months ago, I saw IE9 as part of the updates on the Windows Update list. So I checked the box for it to be part of the update installation. Everything acted as if it went through fine. No errors, no freeze/crash/stalls, nothing. 100% trouble free update it looked like. Everything completed doing its thing without any issues.
But when i loaded up IE, it loaded IE8 back up. No IE9. Went back to take a look at the update list, and saw IE9 still on there as part of the updates. Did it again, same thing happened. No signs of trouble or errors during update. I did not get the box “IE9 cannot finish installing” or anything. Everything just went through. I even got the “IE9 installation is complete” before having to restart my computer. Restarted. Same thing. IE8 pops up, no IE9.
I’ve also tried downloading the IE9 installation specific for Vista 64-bit and ran it that way. Same thing. Everything went through without a problem. Only I do not get IE9 loading after reboot, still IE8.
I gave up.
Fast forward to today, I tried again. But this time, through Windows Update, everything went through, again, with no signs of problems or errors. This time, the option for IE9 update even disappeared off the update list after the “installation”. Still no IE9. Did the direct download and installation thing. Same thing. No IE9 after reboot. No errors, no “cannot finish installing”, no IE9.
