Restart + desktop items gone

Hi there. If this is the wrong forum I am greatly sorry, I'm unsure where to put this.
As of late, my firefox was acting up and I assumed it was a part of firefox, not my computer.
I think restarted my computer at one point today and a few things happened.
1. Before everything loaded on my desktop, the screen was white for a extended period.
2. When everything DID load, half my icons and files were missing.

So I figured MAYBE I had a virus. Did a system restore and then did a computer scan in safe mode to ensure it was all removed and voila, problem seems to be gone.
Except now I'm still missing some files. Of the 65 files/folders/shortcuts on my desktop, roughly 5 are missing for some reason. Thank lord I have a before-shot picture of what my desktop looked like, so I know exactly what is missing. I've looked everywhere and cant find the files that have dissapeared.

My question is -> How do I recover the "missing" files and will the white screen happen everytime I restart/shut down my computer?

Welcome
The good news is the files are on the hard drive
Use Shadow Explorer to find them
Once you have the documents, back them up. Everyone should always back up to prevent this problem
ShadowExplorer.com - About
Once you are whole again, post back we will try to pevent in the future.
Also make a full scan with the free malwarebytes in addition to your anti virus scan

I tried using it, and I'll be completely honest, I have no idea what I'm looking for.
I mean I know the files of what i'm looking for, but this program confuses me.

This is what you do, back up all your stuff on a separate hard drive, with Macrium. Keep it current and if it ever happens again, you have the Hard Drive backed up and you can just reinstall the image, very quickly
Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download
Dont use any registry cleaners, maintenance etc. To keep your computer clean of crap use ccleaner and untick the registry stuff.

To maintain your computer

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/81176-speed-up-performance-vista.html

10 Tips on How to Properly Maintain Your Computer

Steps that I did not notice on the guide include:

Running a scan disc before doing a defrag

Using Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes.

Making System Restore points, at least once a week

Makaing a system Image once a month (varies by user)

Not relying on your A/V common sense, should prevail. You know of many sites can cause a problem.

Do not use any reg cleaning or optimizing software.

Download and use Ccleaner about once every two months. Untick any registry entries.

If you follow these instructions, you will be trouble free for a long time to come.

Be sure to back up your hard drive about once a month (varies by user) and to keeep system restore points up to date.

Glad that it all worked out, my friend.
