A black screen with only mouse cursor appears for long time after login to my ID

I have recently encountered a problem with explorer.exe. A black screen with only mouse cursor appears for long time after login to my ID, it takes approximately 7 to 10 mins before the desk top loading up.

Anyway every time I now logon I have to press 'Ctrl-Alt-Del' and then open Task Manager, and run a new task 'explorer.exe' and everything is loading quickly. I'm just wondering why it keeps doing this?

Thanks, all help is appreciated,
Val

Can you boot into safe mode? If you can try SFC. Also if safe mode works try a clean startup.

Hi townsbg,

Thx for reply. Yes I can boot to safe mode and have no problem with loading in safe mode, and I have already performed sfc /scannow....it went to 100 % completion with no problem. Btw, I have 3 ID's on my computer, the other 2 ID's have no problem with loading. Only the ID that I use the most that's having problem with loading explorer.exe.

If the other profiles are working then it must be your profile corrupted. That's not as devastating as as corrupted OS because you can create a new profile for yourself, move your files, export you fire fox bookmarks, and more easily start over. I hope you have access to another account that is an administrator. Your only difficulties might be if you use an email client such as outlook. As for me, the profile is use the most is a regular user and I rarely log into the admin profile. I'm curious though; have you done anti-virus/anti-spyware scans?

I did anti-virus/anti-spyware using webroot and AVG, it came up with nothing. As for creating a new profile, I'm not sure I want to do it at this time because of my work as photographer/photo editor, I have large files and folders of photos and documents that have to be exported and I don't want to mess anything up, plus I don't have enough skill on Vista on how to it, so I guess I will have to stay on with my old profile for the time being. I just wanted to thank for your help though.

Regards,

Val
