usb transfer speed really slow

my fujistu siemens amilo laptop transfer speeds to my wd 2tb elements external are realy slow wen transferring any amount of files starts off at 60 mbps then drops to 1.66 to be exact takes 1 hour 30minutes for 6 gb .ive checked cable and replaced it with a monster 800mbps cable still no differance tried it on on my xp laptop and speed are normal just the vista laptop im having trouble with .theres 2 intel (r) ich9 family usb2 enhanced host controllers but theres three usb ports what could be causing this ive switched of all programs that could be conflicting. what could be causing this

Do you show any yellow exclamation points in Device Manager? Seems pretty strange. Don't think I've run into normal read with such a small write rate before.

nope nope no yellow exclamation marks its realy irratating me now im finding vista realy unstable even tho with microsfts supposed update fixes

I've never owned a laptop. The basic divide in diagnosis is hardware vs software. You tried the external on another system, so that's eliminated. I would try all the USB ports you can plug into. See if there's any significant difference.

Something you can try without wiping your system partition is booting an OS off CD or USB. Try one of those Linux or other self-contained boot CDs and see if you can write at normal speed. (If you can't boot from CD there are utilities to copy the image to a bootable USB stick.) If it's bad hardware it should still be broken under Linux. If it works then it's most likely a software issue. You have to take that fork in the road before you can plan any other tests.
