Hi, I bought a msi GT627 about a year ago and when it got here, I noticed it had 3 partitions. 1 with windows vista on it. 1 with the OS installed (C:) and 1 was just a data drive (D:)

My C: drive only had 50 gb total on it. Yeah it finally filled up. My D: had 250 gb of space on it. I decided I just wanted 2 drives. One with the windows disk on it and the other with the OS which is (C:) I deleted the entire D: drive and then I extended my c: drive to total around 295 gb.

I reinstalled windows Vista onto the new C: drive and now every time when windows boots up to the desktop. I get a small DOS window ( C:windows/system32/cmd.exe) and then approximately 30 seconds later, windows shuts down. I cannot figure out what to do here. I thought maybe I shouldnt have deleted the D: drive but in my mind it was just a storage drive. I tried to make a new D: just smaller but it didnt fix the problem. If I go into safe mode, it runs fine but I obviously cannot update things because of safe mode limitations. Any help at all would be much appreciated..

Very confusing post, you say you had Vista on one partition and the OS on another partition. Vista is an operating system.

You should get everything you want off the pc and then reinstall Vista. Wipe out all your partitions as you install, you can always make more partitions later with partition wizard home 7.0

Following the link that I provided you can make the partitions as you install.

Thanks for the quick replies! I will try to clear this up a little.

the hard drive has a 7 gb partition which I guess is the recovery console (aka the software installed to "reinstall" windows vista which does a format and reinstall)

the C: just gets named the OS drive and that drive was 50gb.... It basically just loaded the operating system on this partiton by itself

the D: was just a data drive.. I was under the assumption it was a storage drive like an external hdd or flash drive etc... it was just an extra partition on the hdd.

1. I deleted D: and extended C: to 290ish gb's
2. I ran the recovery console by pressing f3 on my computer which formatted and re-installed the OS onto my C: drive
3. the D: no longer exists
4. the computer reboots every time it loads to desktop approximately 30 seconds after I get the desktop
5. I don't have the recovery disk/Windows disk that is supposed to come with the computer. (this is why I bought a MSI in the first place, thinking they would include that unlike Dell's Hp's etc.. but boy was I wrong)

Soooo, I have no clue what to do now. I called MSI and apparently they can't help me. They are telling me I need to buy the recovery disk (25 dollars plus 12 dollars shipping) and that my recovery console is corrupt. That doesnt make sense to me because it formatted just fine before I deleted the D: partition. I have formatted it a couple of times before this time using the recovery console.

So that's where I'm at. Man you would think for a 1400 dollar computer from "Newegg" (mind you, who is cheap anyway), that MSI would include the stupid recovery disk with the purchase.

See if you can find someone who has the version you have on dvd and make a copy of it somehow. As long as you have a key somewhere on your machine you should be able to activate it.

You have 30 days to activate it, so make sure you`re happy with it b4 you do.

No he can only do that to a retail disk. A disk from a manufacturer such as dell can only be installed on that manufacturer's systems. Only a retail disk can be installed on any system and a retail disk will not accept an OEM (manufacturer's) serial number.

So you can't reinstall with the recovery partition? Have you tried to follow Rich's instructions?

I do have the partition. The problem is, that when I run windows off of the partition. It loads everything fine until I get booted to the desktop. After 30 seconds it reboots. Then it reposts and reboots over and over again. It is looping for some strange reason. I see no reason for the system to act like this just because I deleted the data drive.
