Vista Unzip not working properly

Hi Everyone,
Got a problem with vista unzipping.

Been reading posts on here and tried a few given options - Reset openswith to Windows Explore (zip folder now has different icon - pc monitor ?) but no good. (posts are 3 or more years old tho)

All was ok and I had no problems unzipping untill about a month ago.
Ive not done anything or installed anything on laptop.

Ive backed up my website to a zip folder.

When I double click the zip a folder opens and I see all files and folders ok. (if I close the folder everything disappears and I dont know where to?
I can click on an unzipped folder and see whats inside - if another folder is inside I can open this as well.

Ive tried to drag these to another folder but can only do so one at a time.
If I drag folder1 and this has folder2 inside it, only the folder1 is moved (without any folder inside)

If I unzip (extract all) to another folder only the cgi-bin gets unzipped

I will be gratefull for any advice / help.
Regards
Jim

This sounds like a problem with the zip program- you didn't say what it is.

If you right click on a .zip file, what does it recommend opening it with? Is it the zip program you expect?

Hi Wither 3,
Thanks for your reply.

Sorry I meant to say the zip program is the default one that comes with Vista

It says it opens with Windows Explorer.

Prior to trying to sort this the zipped file icon used to be a zipped folder, now its like a page with pc monitor in the centre and the top right corner folded over.

On right click, Open with, the 2 other programs recommended to open are Internet Explorer and Microsoft Frontpage (tried these - nothing but trouble and pop-up windows with explorer)

Ive been trying to find what the original default is and where to browse for it.
Thanks
Jim

Do you have a copy of WinZip installed? Has it expired? Try uninstalling it if that applies.

After all this time, I didn't even know that Vista had a zip\unzip feature.

This is free and is way smoother than the built in zip support
7-Zip

The only time I use Windows built in zip is when I first install an OS. I have to unzip 7-zip. :)

I agree MilesAhead but I'm trying to work within the framework provided.

The change in the icon for a zipped file means something is interfering.

First thing, go to Default Programs in Control Panel. Under Associate a file......, what program is set for .zip files?

I think the confusion some are having is the reference to "ZIP" file. In Microsoft lingo, they're referred to as "compressed" files mostly, and sometimes "zipped". The commands to use it are inherent in the properties menu.

It's very odd behavior of the built-in compression utility that you're mentioning.

Have you verified if it can compress files OK? You highlight a few files, right mouse click on them, select the "Send To" menu item, and then finally "Compressed (zipped) Folder". Try creating a new one, then see if the behavior is the same. Also, after expanding the zipped folder, highlight the contents and copy, then try pasting in a new location--see if more than one file is transferred.

One last thing...
Check out the Compressed File Tutorial (Vista Forums). Try turning off the zip file compression utility, then turn it back on again. Maybe that will "reset" things. If not, then perhaps whatever system files are used to facilitate it were compromised/corrupted somehow. I don't know how you can manually fix this, except perhaps by running SFC scan command to see what files might be suspect. If it becomes too much of a pain, then you might want to install a 3rd party compression utility. I recommend WinRAR. It is very versatile, supporting a multitude of compression file types, plus it tends to compress to smaller file sizes.

^ Good suggestion. The registry file for "Zip" is the only one required here.
