Black screen at start up

I've a Packard Bell desktop PC running Vista Home Premium. Have had it for a couple of years. Have kept up to date with all relevant updates.
On Sunday when I turned on my PC and screen the screen did not display (remained black). Windows loaded and I then turned the screen off and turned it back on again and lo-and-behold the display was OK and remained OK thereafter. The same happened on Monday so I did a system restore to last Friday (when all was working OK). Today (tuesday) the same - black screen on start-up - occured. I had not added any software between Friday and Sunday, I do not use any 'hibernation' type functionality.
If I do a restart the screen displays OK.
Help I'm a bit lost as to what may be causing this behaviour ?
Any advice greatly received
Thanks
Bazza

What caught my eye is that you said you find that you've turned on the both the computer and the screen, but that the screen remains blank through the loading up of Windows. You turned it off then back on and then the screen finally shows the normal display. But even after a system restore, the problem repeated.

When booting up, the most basic of services is started in Windows, including a simple VGA display service. This is later overlaid by a much more sophisticated video driver and other software to manage graphics as the main Windows logon screen appears. So, if you're not even seeing the basic start-up display, then I have a feeling there is an issue with the monitor. It could be something as simple as a dirty switch. Try turning it on/off a few times. Does it always display normally again when switched on? If you reboot, does it remain OK? Is this problem happening only after having not used the computer overnight?
