How can I reset a user account without deleting it?

Hello

On my Windows Vista home computer, my usual user account has developed a (by now minor) problem with the mouse cursor at startup. (For those interested in the details, see thread "Mouse cursor problem - unstable position"). I regularly run a registry tool (Registry Mechanic), which works fine, but does not solve this problem.

My question is: How can I reset that account, without deleting documents etc. belonging to the account? I am prepared to re-install the rather few programs installed only for that user.

Is it for example possible to force the system to create new registry information (the user-specific NTUSER.DAT file if I understand things correctly) for that user - after taking a copy?

(If this question better belong to a specific forum, please let me know which one - the right forum was not obvious to me.)

Best regards,
Lars

In my experience with any version of Windiws, trying to "save time" by altering an existing account was nothing but headaches. It's usually easier just to bite the bullet and create a new account. Check Tutorials sections. There may be some tips on moving your files over once the new account is created.

Reagistry Mechanic, in common with ALL Registry 'Cleaners' and 'Optimisers' is dangerous to the health of your machine.
UNINSTALL it before it cripples the computer totally, and requires a reinstall.

Okay, I may choose to create a new account. The tutorials gave some good advice also on the error messages that was the result of changing the name of NTUSER.DAT. I dit not end up with the desired result, so a new account may be a better route.

As for Registry Mechanic (RM), I see the problem in theory, but have not experienced it in reality. The problems described in my other thread existed long before I installed any registry cleaner on my machine, and so far I have been happy with RM.

Assuming I end up creating a new account (instead of living the the small remaining problems): Does anybody have advice on moving or copying podcasts in iTunes to the new account?

Best regards,
Lars
