Windows Vista Won't Show File and Folder Names

Directories and file symbols are just shown without any text name beneath them. It is only in the DVD drive, drive E, and only in the root directory at that, not in subdirectories.

The only posts I could find were people who claimed it could be fixed by going to properties and telling me to set the directory type to pictures and videos under properties, customize, and then when I right click and then go to view, that there would be a "hide file names" option which I could uncheck and get it to therefore SHOW file names. But they are all wrong. No such option appears. As you can see in these screen shots:

I found another post that said I should go to Organize / Folder and Search Options / View Tab and click the Reset Folders Button. Apply/OK and close and restart the explorer window, or possibly kill windows explorer with the task manager, and then try again to see if the hide file names option is there. Either way, it doesn't.

So, how do I REALLY get it to show file and directory names?

Hi,

At some point you appear to have customised this folder?

Click on the Sort by option (First picture & see if the options are the same as mine?

Lottiemansion despite what you said, I finally figured out how to bring up a list that looked like the one you showed. Indeed my list looked pretty much the same. I tried mucking around with with "customizing" the folder, I told it to restore the default settings and not to, and then later to apply to subfolders, and NOW not only the root directory of e: doesn't show filenames, NOW it ALSO doesn't show the filenames for any of the subdirectories. So much for the default settings and customizing. Now all I need to do is do something that makes it do the same thing to drive c: and I'll be really up a creek.

Milesahead, the article didn't help either.

I hope you made a Restore Point before changing anything. You need a way to get back to square one when making system changes.

btw It's a good idea when posting a problem to have your system specs filled in. Otherwise people make a guess or 2 at a fix, then spend the next 15 posts asking if you have this or that on your system, service pack level.. It really wastes time.

I tried uninstalling the DVD drive and restarting the computer just now. That didn't work. I have discovered that it isn't ALL subdirectories, only MOST of them. For instance, I put in one particular CD with the following directories: "csen", "fairmount", "faxes", "floppybak", "floppybak2", "jpm2", "sensell", "spring" and "stuff from disks", and everything in the root directory and everything within each of thoe directories I just listed but "faxes" and "floppybak" appears as in the picture, with no title underneath the files and directories, but within faxes and floppybak, all files and directories are shown correctly.

As of uninstalling and reinstalling the CD drive, now it has spread to the recycle bin. A file in the recycle bin, which was deleted from drive c:, is now shown without a title underneath it. It was there before I restarted the computer. Nothing else within the file system of drive c: that I can find has been affected.

You should put the specs in the same place as OS 32 that you typed in. That way it's always there when somebody clicks on My System Specs. Just click Quick Links, Edit System Spec.

afa the problem, I've never encountered anything like it. Maybe Explorer is corrupted.

Unless Lottiemansion can think of something else I'd try sfc /scannow
If that doesn't do it, you may have to reinstall. But see what Lottiemansion suggests first.

Since it's an HP machine you could try here for free support:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Home.jsp?lang=en&cc=US&refresh=true

Maybe someone has run into the problem. All the members on that board have HP PCs.
