Solved 4GB Memory showing only 2GB in Task Manager

I do not know if it is ok to ask this question but any help will be appreciated.
I got Dell Laptop and I have added total 4GB memory.

When I click Performance in Task Manager under Physical memory total is showing 2045 which is equal to 2GB right?
I wonder why it does not show 4GB?
Am I making any mistake?

PS, attaching screen shot(sorry OS is in Japanese)

Thank you

Richc46- as far as I know, a 32 bit system can use up to 4 Gb of RAM, which includes the graphics memory. That's why it's advisable to use a 64 bit system to allow using more than 4 Gb of Ram. As I understand it, most systems would show around 3.25 Gb as available. Of course, he didn't say which version of Vista he's using but the Aero (if he's running it) would take up around .5 Gb so now we're down to about 2.75 Gb. Other running processes could be using the other .75 Gb.

Dell technical support had guided me. My computer had 2GB memory pre-installed, therefore, Dell advised me to buy 2x2 GB=4GB which I could use in Windows vista Home premium 32 bit.

The link for memory test you added is talking about problems not test. I think I will check again after posting this thread.

Thank you.

My Computer

The link shows you how to take the test. It should be overnight. Run for 8 passes. Then take each stick and test in a good slot for 6 passes each.

I have already used Memtest even Vista memory test and found everything ok.

I wonder if someone can guide me, how to check memory in safe mode. I think there is an option we can check the memory but I forgot. Also how to exit safe mode.

PS*just now I removed the memory and re-inserted and they still showing 2GB instead 4GB.

Thank you

My Computer

I dont think it is necessary to check in safe mode. The important thing to remember with the memory test is to test for 8 passes (this is usually done over night). The second thing is to check each stick in a known good slot for about 6 passes. If you did this correctly, we can move on.

Just run it over night, when not in use. Run for about 8 hours.

I'm assuming you bought two identical 2 Gb sticks. Is there more than two slots for memory on your motherboard? If so, try putting one in slot 1 and the other in slot 3.

One thing I forgot to ask. As there are two slots for RAM and there are 2GBx2 memories in two slots. If computer is showing only 2GB does this mean one memory or one slot is not working?
Thank you

My Computer

That is one possibility. That is why we make a test of all the ram and then we test each stick in a slot that is working. With 4GB of ram, you DO have more than one stick.

To wither 3, there are only two slots and 2GB each for two slots.

To richc46, I am on geekstogo.com and trying to figure it out how to runt memtest as you are talking. Therefore, I also joined them.

Thank you

My Computer

Problem solved:)
I removed the DIMM A and B Memory Module then using
air blower(rubber not can) cleaned the module edge connecter and re-install
B and A Memory.
Now it is showing 4GB.

I appreciate cooperation extended by members. Your answers help me to think:geek:
Thank you.
