Solved WinVista x64 incredibly slow

Hello, I use a laptop that uses Windows Vista Ultimate x64 I think, I don't know too much about it because it is a relative's computer. But what I do know is i've used it before and it worked fine but today it is slow.

Windows Explorer(Not Internet Explorer) is very slow and any programs trying to be ran on it are such as games, internet browsers or just the Windows browsing in the computer itself. If I try to open something, it takes a a minute or over to open a page then sometimes slowly loads. I've already done reading all over the internet for the past 6 hours and the best results i've had is "go to msconfig and go to startup bar and click the 'Hide all microsoft services' button and then click 'disable all' , then apply then ok." I tried that and still the same issue. So I disabled ALL services including the windos services in the startup tab under msconfig which can you find by searching msconfig in the search bar. So now, not only is it still slow, I can't seem to re-enable the microsoft services either because they don't show up which also means we can't seem to format the computer because I don't think my relative has the Windows CD for it(He did not pirate it) He just has some virtual disk purchase kinda thing going on so he formats the computer from the inside.

I just don't know what to do anymore and my brain is fried and I feel like giving up.

Please let me know if anybody finds a solution.
Thank you.

Also it helps to fill in the system specs. In addition it may help if you tell us how many partitions you have and how much free space you have on the system partition ( usually C: )

I can't even access the internet to do that, but I will try the 2nd alternative about vista performance. But I think there might be a way.

Also, I will get the specs as soon as the computer loads device manager, which is taking a while.

So I do believe that the system specs are:

Display adapter: ATI Mobility radeon HD 4600 series

Processor: 2 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P7350 @ 2.00GHz

Disk Drive:TOSHIBA MK5055GSX

DVD/CD-ROM Drives: HL-DT-ST-DVDRAM GA10F

Computer:ACPI x64-based PC

Monitor:Generic PnP monitor

NetWork Adapter: BUFFALO WLI-UC-GNM Wireles LAN Adapter

Those are the specs, sorry if I poorly described it, my knowledge is very limited when it comes to computer this way.

On the side-note, is there any way to bring back the microsoft services under StartUp tab is the msconfig? Because windows looks plain and I can't access the internet on it with them disabled , and unless necassary otherwise, because the microsoft service things i used to see in StartUp tab are no longer there meaning I can't re-enable them.

:(

My Computer

Can you access it using safe mode with networking?

It seems the microsoft services i was referring too is under services tab, sorry, but at any rate I enabled in them in safe mode, rebooted and I still see a dull windows. T.T

My Computer

From safe mode with networking download and install malwareabytes, update, and run a scan. Also run a scan using your anti-virus software.

If you click on Quick Links then Edit System Specs and fill them in there you'll find they show up when people press the Systems Specs in the lower left corner of all your posts. See that way if you post other problems people don't have to search 100s of posts for that particular one above.

Also the reason I asked for free space on your system partition, if it's very low, that will slow down any machine even if it doesn't have other problems.

Easiest way, open My Computer showing all the drives, take a screen shot and post it.

I didn't see that anywhere, I was describing everything I saw from device manager.

I am going to try and just re-enable all services to see if it brings back windows to normal, even if at slow speed so it doesn't look dull and I can access more features.

I am really sorry that this is so difficult, please forgive me, I am not sure what the problem is, all I can do is investigate. Once again, sorry for this trouble.

I only have 2 drives:TI101023V0E (C: )

CD Drive (D: )

That's it but my C: Drive has 361 GB free of 453 GB so I have alot of space open

We have located a backup CD with the OS that comes with the laptop and are formatting it now, hopefully this will work and if it does I will mark this problem as solved, sorry for any trouble and hat I was so difficult to work with. I highly appreciate everybody's patience. :)

My Computer

That is probabaly best.

Let us know how it goes.

BTW - does that backup disk have SP2 already included?

Some questions:

Have you gone to Accessories and run the Windows Disk Cleanup utility and rebooted?

Is Vista set to automatically defrag the hard drive?

How much RAM does the computer have?

Do you have Cyberlink Power DVD installed?

Do you have Excel installed?

Yes we have done that, and the computer automatically defrags. But that wasn't the cause for the lag ( I wasn't using it while it defragged).

Also, we have formatted the computer and it has new kinds of power. It is a fast laptop and I don't know why it's running fast now, but apparently something that was on here slowing it is not here anymore. When we formatted the hard drive it took 2 hours( I don't know why) My grandfather supposed that the hard drive was going bad.

All I know now is it is running fast and everybody is happy. It had alot of unnecessary stuff so s'all good now.

Thank you all for helping and sorry I wasn't very cooperative, I didn't really know what I was talking about. :S

When you're dealing with a computer you do not own or has had many hours of use prior to your ownership, it's anybody's guess as to what went on before with it. You just don't know why myriad of software conflicts or infestations may have plagued it, either now or in the past. Sometimes a conflict won't reveal itself directly. Services will compete for the same resources and bring the system to a crawl, without any warning from the operating system. However, I've heard that W7 is supposed to be a little better at identifying such conflicts. You can still troubleshoot within Vista, but it's a more concerted effort.

Anyway, sometimes starting from scratch is best. Glad to hear that the reformat and new installation solved it. But like you, I'd be burning to know just what it was that tripped up the computer before. You know, this would be an excellent case for a kind of operating system configuration snapshot and compare utility. It gathers up all information about services loaded, installed drivers, user customization, and installed hotfixes. This is saved and is then capable of being copied to any other installation (on another computer or a new installation on the existing computer) where it can be referenced for comparison.

Also, I was once advised by an IT guru friend from the past who once told me that no matter what, it's always a good idea to completely re-install a Windows operating system every 4 years. Something about it degrades over time (registry settings, system file management/configuration, hard disk internal file tables, etc) and it's far more trouble free to just wipe the slate clean and install fresh. That was back in the days of Windows 95. Even now, it seems like it's still a good idea to do it with Vista or W7.
