Power supply buzzing

Hello everyone :)

couple of days ago i start to hear a buzzing noise coming from my power supply, if i surf and work 27/4
on my pc its fine, but go to run a game, at some point it shuts down and reboots, also i have noticed
if i am changing web pages etc, the noise changes, higher and lower buzzing tone, but always the same noise...its like its sucking my power or something

pc specs + stuff i have done
quad core "renewed cpu paste"
gtx460 checked drivers "no break down in graphics when playing"
3 gb ram "checked with new memory tested with 4 gb ram"
vista 64
750 power supply "approx 4 years old" or more !!
3 hard drives, 750,500,150 2x sata's 1 mormal

my pc is about 4+years old but it as only had few times its been turn off due to beta game testing all hours of day and night..
the noise is like a sound you sometimes hear at the back of old tv's !
like i said above it will surf and do little work with no problems 24/7
put a game in and it switch's off like 5 mins into it approx, it does not freeze or lock up..

    info on fans it as a large fan on front and back inside the case, also comes with another large fan on the inside of the case, plus the other standard fans inside
Does your fan go on at excessive speeds, or does your CPU usage go up to 100% before crashing?

I've seen this very behavior when a video graphics card is installed that the power supply can't adequately support. When running a video game, the graphics card kicks into high gear, demanding more power than the power supply can provide and then BOOM, it shuts down.

I realize it's a 750w PS, but you've got 3 hard drives running in this thing, so already it is under a moderate load. What kind/size graphics card do you have? Maybe 4++ years of steady use has worn out the power supply.

Unplug everything and open the machine. Check the and make sure the fan isn't rubbing against any wires or anything. If it's buzzing that's a dangerous sign and you don't want to take that lightly. Fix it ASAP. My father had his computer burst into flames on two separate occasions due to the power-supply.

Here's my thing.. A bad psu doesn't reboot right away, they usually power off.

I think cytherian has the right idea. I too suspect that your psu, being a lower quality and older, it has lost it's umph, and so when you stress it, it starves the system just enough to cause it to faulter.

Eeek

If this is your psu:l - Alpha Power 750W Power Supply Unit White Box -
It has only MAX 34Amps, but more likely 30Amps

As compared to a Top quality Corsair 650W that has 53Amps.

Youre psu is bullocked!

Here some suggestions:
okay -> Newegg.com - CORSAIR Builder Series CX600 V2 600W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply
Better -> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341017
Best -> Newegg.com - CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX650 V2 650W ATX12V v2.31/ EPS12V v2.92 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC High Performance Power Supply

If you look, Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, LED LCD TV, Digital Cameras and more!
the amps on the 12V is the important thing. The 1st Corsair and ocz are the same Watts, but the ocz has 10 more Amps

You need roughly 550W or more, 650W isx plenty, even for sli 460's, and as many Amps as you can afford.

If you gotta go there, the ocz is just fine, I'm a snob on psu's though ;)

You will have no issues with it.

I probably can't, most people I've help build from the UK go with scan.co.uk or overclockers.co.uk But it's your money and sanity so do only what you are comforable with.

I have no problem saying that the ocz will be fine for you, and future upgrades.

Plus the £8 gos to a local shop.

That's pretty good actually. Though the gpu load wasn't too high.

Furmark is a great load tester, as it loads just the gpu.
