Solved White Screen, can't do anything :(

Hello there.

The other day my computer screen randomly went completely white/grey with a vista loading icon in the center, so I restarted.
Everything seemed fine for the restart until it got to actually being on my desktop, I tried this several times and I other got the blank screen straight away or briefly saw my background (Without icons or taskbar) then got the white screen.
If I Ctrl-Alt-Del, I can get onto the screen which allows you to log off, open task manager etc but If I choose task manager, I end up with the white screen again.
If I log off or turn off, I'm back on my desktop with icons and all for about two second before the action is completed.

I've tried running it in safemode, it boots up fine but as soon as I'm on the safemode desktop it logs me out then starts windows normally, taking my back to the white screen.

I know the screen works because It's hooked up to and xbox and other things just fine, and It does work for some parts of booting up. I've got no idea whats causing the problem. :(

Any help/comments would be appreciated- I don't want to do a factory reset as there's information on my computer I need. I'd be willing to rollback to an older save (If that's even possible) as long as my files arent at risk.

Thank you!

If it boots fine in safemode then we may be able to fix it.

Please post your system specs.

Try a restore to an earlyer time.

Try booting using the lst known good configuration.

Try removing your gfx card drivers while in safe mode then rebooting causing the computer to reinstall.

My specs are as follows:

Windows Vista Home Premium x64
Intel Core i5 processor (highest of the series, 750 or similar?)
Gigabyte GA-P55-USL motherboard
4GB DDR3 RAM
ATI Radeon 5500
Stealth 500W power Supply

Tried starting it in safemode, I got to the desktop with the black background and retro windows taskbar but the computer quickly logs off, it then begins again in normal mode- bringing back the white screen. I hear from a friend that he had a similar problem with a virus affecting his startup programs.

Would I be able to do any of your suggested fixes without safe mode? I wouldn't normally mind a factory reset but I've got a lot of files I really don't want to lose

If you have any other questions about the specs please ask!

If you suspect a virus then enter your bios and select your cd drive as the first boot device.
Use a friend computer and look here Free Bootable AntiVirus Rescue CDs Download List
I have not used this site before so you do so at your own risk.

Found it was a variation of the MoneyPak FBI virus which had disabled my safe mode, successfully booted from a USB and managed to remove it. Thank you very much for your help.

Could you give me a summary of what you did to remove it? I have the exact same problem. I successfully cleaned everything with a kaspersky rescue disk, but still have the white screen and am unable to boot into safe mode.

So basically you can't boot to your system at all? If that is the case, working outside of the Windows environment will be your best bet. I would recommend if you are still having problems, posting for help at a dedicated malware removal forum.
