is there a way to run a diagnosis tool to find out if hardware such as fan are not working correctly?

I'd go so far as re TIM the cpu heat sink, as the constant over heating may have dred up stuff.

sorry what is tim the cpu heat sink?

thanks for hlping me.

As you know you have the cpu, and on it is soime sort of cooler, usually copper. To properly transfer the heat from the cpu to the coler, you put a paste inbetween to fill in all the micro scratches. The paste is called TIM, or Thermal Interface Material. And obviously, "re-TIMing" would be to take off the old crude, and put new stuff on.
Done in the correct matter, it can drop temps significantly on an older machine.

Here's a good site: How to apply thermal grease on laptop processor >> Inside my laptop

I am going to stay out of this one since I am not very good with laptops. They are really tricky to work with.

hi guys thanks for all your help

i have always cleand out the fan as best i could without removing (for fear of breaking something) but i followed the clip provided by PATONB and removed fan and between fan and heat sink was an obscene amount of dust that i could not see without removing fan. so have removed that and installed core temp and it sits at between 47.c and 52.c and have hd no cut outs yet and fan is quiter and coming on less amazing thanks for your help guys and my dad says thanks also as its his laptop.. :)

Youre a smidgen warm, but not to bad for a laptop.

I knew this would work, as this happened to my Acer 8930g. Popped open the door and the grill was caked with nearly half inch of dust cloth.

I'd still recomend the redoing the TIM. But it's not a nessessity.

Enjoy and tell your Dad "Your welcome, and no problems glad to help"

yep its worked a treat.. yeah i know what you mean caked it didnt even look like dust there was so much of it "cloth"

as for the TIM i took the heat sink off and on one of the chips (graphics maybe?) it was still intact stuck to the sink but on the other (CPU?) the square of thick blue gel some came away stuck to the sink and some stayed stuck to the chip (not sure if thats good or bad sign?) but as i didnt have any couldnt replace just wanted to check it out. will look at getting some and doing it if you think from what i described that it is necessary..

hes well chuffed and says hes very gratefull thanks

The stock paste is usually a sticky pad, never seen blue stuff though.......

It's eally your choice, as the laptop is runnng normal temperatures, doing new TIM, would be an added bonus.

hi

yes it is more of a sticky square pad grey/blue in color one is complete the other is degraded a bit. (half stuck to the sink half to the chip)

is there a good type you can reccomend and would i need to remove the old if so how would i do that safely?

thanks again
