Vista won't boot

I was on my computer, I believe watching youtube videos, when it froze completely. After restarting it, it would only load a black screen. This has happened once before and after running a scan it was repaired. I restarted my computer again and it told me I should do a startup repair. It asked if I wanted to start from the last good point on my computer and I okay'ed it. It then told me it would restart and if the problem was fixed it would go back to normal, if not it would go back to startup repair, so I ended up on the startup repair screen again. This time it just kept running.
After looking around on some forums and similar problems I saw that this could take days, so I left it. It has now been 6.5 days and still on the repair. I canceled it and shut down my computer. I then did a memory scan, which found no errors (I believe this is the scan that fixed it last time), and brought me back to normal startup or startup repair. I attempted normal startup and got stuck on a black screen again. After that I tried to boot in safe mode and have been stuck on the loading screen. The last driver to load is "windows\system32\DRIVERS\avgidshx.sys". It has been on this screen for at least 15 minutes now. I'm not sure what to do next.
The laptop the problem is occurring on is running vista home basic x32 as far as I know.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

That driver is related to AVG. I researched and found this thread. AVG Update today, comp won't boot - CNET AVG Forums

About half way down there are instructions that will help you rename some folders using a recovery disk. If nothing else you can try the AVG forum. You should also be able to contact their technical support. AVG | AVG Support and Discussion Forums

Alternate to their recovery CD

I was able to fix this problem without downloading and using their recovery CD - here are the steps I took if you're familiar with the command line:
- Hit F8 during startup and started System Recovery Mode (I think that's what it was called - first option)
- Chose Command Prompt
- Navigated to my Program Files (x86) directory (which surprisingly wasn't on C: but on E:)
- Went into the avg/avg10 folder
- rename avgrsa.exe avgrsa.bak
- rename avgchsva.exe avgchsva.bak

Voila! Windows started up fine in normal mode after that. Now to uninstall AVG

thank you so much. i'll have to go through the steps on that when i get home to see if that fixes it. i've been using avg for years and never thought that would be the issue.
