My cd\dvd drive is missing! How do I get it back?

It seems to have stopped working after switching from vista to 7. It will open and shut but won't do anything when i try to run a disc. It used to be listed under D:\ drive but now its nowhere to be shown when I try to locate my disc drives. It seems to be a problem with the driver I think but don't know how to fix it. I've tried uninstalling and rebooting it but it fails to install properly. I've also tried updating but it tells me I've got the best update already. I believe something like this happened to me before but I can't remember what I did to resolve it. I'm lost here!

try control panel > admin tools > computer management > disk management .... make sure you have a disk in the drive ... it could have simply just dropped the drive letter .... assign it a new one
