Replace Hard Drive in Dell Studio XPS Laptop

FCUSA

Member
It has been a long time but stilll see some familiar faces. My hard drive went and we just installed a new Toshiba (direct replacement) on this Dell Laptop.

I have the original OS Re-installation DVD (from Dell) but it is not recognizing it. Not quite sure what to do/try next.

Appreciate any input/direction.

Post here and ask Peter (Ex_Brit) to send you the link to the versions of Vista you need, 32 or 64. Include your E-mail address mucked up, like abc at xyz DOT com then edit your post and remove it as soon as you receive the link.

The ISO Peter provides has both SP1 and SP2 applied.

Pick up the Tutorial: How to Download a Vista ISO and Create an Installation DVD or USB here:

STEP THREE
To Create Vista Installation DVD or USB Flash Drive with ISO File

During the install, when asked for the key, don't enter it. You will then be given a menu where you can chose the version you want to install.

Activate once the install is completed.

Ok...I have the ISO from Ex_Brit but the computer is not recognizing the DVD. The Hard Drive is installed and recognized - DELL PP35L XPS HD Replacement (7mm 500GB SATA 5400PPM) which is a direct replacement from Toshiba. Said it was pre-formatted but is there anything else I need to do to prepare for ISO installation? (realizing my disk or download could be bad, thought I would ask this before downloading and/or burning another disk.)

Thank you!

I assume you used IMGBurn to burn the DVD? Was it at default settings and did it verify the disk after burning? (It looks almost like a second burn).

Hello again Ex_Brit!

I did use IMGBurn (per instructions and your kind communications thru e-mail). It did verify and the BIOS was set to DVD when we tried loading it.

What do you mean by a 'second burn'?

That was just for the record here, but I did add the verify part as I just thought of it. Well I'm stumped for answers on that one, sorry.

I thought I would post here to be certain there is nothing needed for the drive. Will trying downloading again (probably pick up some new media for the second burn).

At a loss...

Could you boot from that drive with any other disk? This might be worthy of its own thread actually as it's hardware-related.

I tried my original disk that came with the computer and it did not work as well (that is what led me to you).

OK, something wrong with that drive, maybe a firmware update from the maker is in order? Or, double-check the BIOS that the right drive is selected as first boot. It can deceive you sometimes.
It should read that drive 1st and the hard drive second. If anything else is in the list temporarily remove them from the list as that can throw it off-kilter, don't ask me why.

Thank you for that info and clarification. I will check those settings as well as other items in the list (which I am confident you realize my next question would be 'If I remove them temporarily...how do I put them back?...)

I have sent an e-mail to the seller of the drives to see if there is anything I needed to do before installing software (weekend so will need to wait until tomorrow).

Often firmware and the way to install it is published on their website. As far as those BIOS entries go, the option to add more will still be there afterwards.
