Solved Extend Activation Time Period On Vista Home Premium

Hello Everyone,
Of course I'm typing this post on my laptop that came pre-installed with vista home premium 32-bit installed on it. A short time ago I stumbled across a site on the internet that offers free software to change older computers that are running older operating systems ( like mine ) into a chromium o.s. that comes installed on newer chromebook computers. At the time I thought this sounded interesting, so I thought I'd try it out. BOY was I wrong for even remotely ever considering it !! I downloaded the transformation software..I followed the installation instructions exactly..( the software MUST be installed via usb drive ). Of course I was informed before I started the procedure that " everything on my hard drive would be deleted ", which at the time didn't bother me. That's where I went wrong..in the fact that I hadn't done a system backup in case something went wrong..which it DID. To keep a long story shorter, I essentially had to start from scratch on my laptop. Anyway, I was FINALLY able to get a copy of vista home premium SP2 32-bit from a forum member in here. The install process seemed to go normally, when I got to the page asking for my product key, I entered the one that came printed on the c.o.a. sticker on the bottom of this laptop. The operating system did install ok, but when I checked to see if my copy of windows was 'activated' it wasn't.I feel like I haven't done anything illegal..I just wanted to get my laptop running again. Now I'm faced with having to contact microsoft to get my copy of windows activated. I did in fact try to extend the grace time period using this tutorial that Brink posted : http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66990-activation-extend-trial-period.html , but instead of extending it to 30 day's it only shows 3 day's. I guess now I have no choice but to contact the microsoft automated activation help line..which I've done previously. as I'm older now, the computer driven voice talk so fast that it's difficult for me to write down the number's that it gives me. I can't figure out why the command prompt I typed in the 'elevated' mode didn't reset my system to 30 day's instead of only 3 ??
Sorry for the long-winded post..but I believe in providing information to others if you are seeking help.
Thanks,
David

Hello David, :)

If you had selected to automatically activate Vista during installation, then the grace period drops to 3 days to activate instead of 30.

There is no immediate need to call Microsoft to activate your system.
The default is for Windows to contact the activation servers three days after installation and complete the activation process for you. In the meantime, yes, it will say the system is not activated, but you can use it normally.
Does your notification area have a message that says "this copy of Windows is not genuine", or has the desktop background been replaced with a black background?
You should take action only when you may receive the "not genuine" message.
Even then you can still use the system, with only a few restrictions in Windows Update.
To be clear, your use of the OEM product key with a downloaded Windows file is not legal, strictly speaking, but it will likely be allowed.

Hi Virtual6,
To be honest..this is my second time re-installing vista on my laptop, via the downloaded iso file. The first I installed the software, I called the microsoft automated # and I did receive a new confirmation # without any problem. The computer generated voice told me to write the number down as it could be used again..but I failed to do so. So far I haven't received any notices of any kind and my screen is still 'normal'.

Update: This morning I called the microsoft automated activation #, now my copy of windows is 'genuine' once again. Also, this time I did it correctly..I wrote down the confirmation # that was given to me, so in case I need to use it again I have it. :geek:
