Hi Ari94, you are almost certainly having the same problem getting Windows updates that everyone else running Vista (including me) is having, so do not try to change the registry. Instead, please post a screenshot of your update history that shows the last time when updates for Windows Vista (not just definition updates for Defender or MSRT) were successfully installed. One long-standing thread about this issue is now too long to read: windows update just seems to hang while checking. The problem keeps getting worse, even for those of us who understand the workaround that I will gladly try to help you use.

Regarding another mysterious update issue that you posted about one year ago (Why Windows update keep sending KB890830 update) that has also become more widespread, you might want to see my thread: May's Malicious Software Removal Tool returns to haunt me June 13. Feel free to post there if you wish.

Hi, sorry for late reply and thank you for detailed information.
Finally I got lucky to install windows vista update manually (refer screen shot).

I use Firefox browser, downloaded the required updated for vista but they failed to install that is why I asked registry question.
But today I used Microsoft Internet Explorer (which I avoid 99%) and downloaded the all required vista updates and install by following method.
    First download all required updates
    then:

    1. Disconnect internet connection.
    2. Disable Auto Windows Updates.
    3. Re-boot computer.
    4. Click on Windows downloaded files one by one . Let installation complete.
    5. Re-boot computer. (rarely after installation it won't ask to re-boot)
Continue installation by re-booting computer when needed.
    6. Re-connect internet after installing updates.
    7. Turn on Auto Windows Updates.
    8. Finally Re-boot computer.
    9. Confirm installed update using Windows update on the left below under Security center " Installed updated program".
Hope above information will be helpful.

I'm glad you were able to get updates for Vista. It is possible to use Firefox, but you must select Save File instead of Open With. For me, it is not necessary to disconnect from the internet if Windows Update has been set to Never check for updates and the PC has been restarted; but you are not the first person to report that it is necessary. It is certainly not necessary to restart PC after this step:

    7. Turn on Auto Windows Updates
I hope you have received more updates for October and November than are shown in your screenshot. An automatic update setting should give you no problems for the next few days because there are no further updates to check for; but Microsoft will release more updates on December 13 (might be December 14 in Japan), and the problem will probably reappear. You can check the last posts in windows update just seems to hang while checking. around December 14 to find out which update(s) to manually install in order to speed up the search for December updates.
