Good morning,

I have recently aquired a problem where my laptop wakes up in the middle of the night.
I can’t understand why as I have not made any changes that would cause this scenario.
I have tried several thing to rectify this but to no avail.
It is Windoes Vista Ultimate.
In device manager I changed the network adapters in power management to NOT allow this device to wake up the computer.
Here are two screenshots that I thought might be of use.

Any advice or help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Do you have a backup program or other functions, such as a defrag, update, etc., scheduled to perform during the night?

Thanks for the reply wither 3, it is appreciated.

I had set those sort of things to disabled.

I can't think of what updates or changes have been made within the timescale when this started happening.

Anyway, I have gone through the Event Viewer again and disabled a few other things, like the Windows backup for daily, logon and unlock ( although this didn't cause the error prior to my current problem). I also disabled the daily system restore, the customer experience improvement with respect for consolidator and optinnotification. I have also disabled the Adobe Acrobat update task and RealPlayer.

Also, as stated below, in device manager I changed the network adapters in power management to NOT allow this device to wake up the computer.

I will see if these have an impact tonight when I put the laptop into sleep mode.

The strange thing is that this happened at about 3.30am in the morning after the laptop is usually put to sleep about 11ish.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT:

Is there any sort of script that can be run (elevated cmd or such like) to list the current event and the time of running? (what time they are actioned etc)

What you might do when it wakes up is to open Task Manager, Applications to see if something is running. You might also look in Services and Processes. The only problem is that you would have to be there when it wakes up since whatever is waking it up may only run for a brief period.

You could also look in Task Scheduler to see if there's something scheduled to run during the overnight.

It's like looking for a needle................................

PAB, let me point out that besides being an inconvenience, the problem may go a lot deeper than a computer that wakes from sleep mode. This is no longer a nice world and people will resort to any activity to make a buck, legal or illegal. There is a scenario, where hackers take control of your computer and run it at night. One reason is that they send out email that will infect other computers; but there are many possible reasons.
Run an antivirus scan, and download and run Malwarebytes. In addition, use the free Eset online scan (very reliable) and see what happens.
These tests may turn out to be negative, but at least we will know that the problem is nothing more than an annoying situation. Good Luck

Thanks for the replies,

Here is where I am at, I have run a full AV scan, CCleaner & Glary Utilities to make sure the system was clean.
It is still doing it.
I have however found that it wakes up around 3 o'clock in the morning.
On investigation, in the Event Viewer>Windows Logs>System I found this which seems to start and tries every 10 minutes on the dot...

The Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service entered the running state.

Could this be the cause of the laptop waking up, and if so, what is the best solution to overcome it please?

Thanks in advance.

I'm sorry that I haven't responded lately. All tied up with other things.

The WIA, as you probably know, allows programs to interact with imaging devices like scanners. I have it running all the time and don't experience the problem you have. I have a scanner installed.

Open Control Panel, Windows Updates and select Settings. What time is it set to for running the check for updates?

Possibly you can try disabling any relevant settings in the laptop's bios to see if the laptop stops waking up. Then make certain all adapters (not only Lan adapters) are set not to be effected by power management.

Then reboot again to determine if the power management setting are working. Also you can try uninstalling devices effected by power management when and when not enable in the laptop's bios.

Sounds as if something been changed that has effected the bit settings somewhere possibly in the bios of the device, which is usually set so the devices can wake or not able to wake.

Things that possibly control power management - Laptop's bios power management settings, devices listed within the laptop bios, device bios, device drivers and OS (possibly other software that has access to certain device settings). Normally if a device bios is set to not accept wake-up calls then the device should not be able to wake the PC.

Possibly it's another driver, running process, task, etc. that's waking up the laptop.
