Back up and Font

Okay, I have been using Vista Home Premium now for almost a week. I can't say I'm all that impressed. It came with my new PC so I thought lets give it a try. I'm not exact ally a power user by any standard, but I do manage to make stuff work for me after working with it for a awhile. This whole thing reminds me of when I first got XP; what a pain in the butt ! Things finally got sorted out in time and I really came to like it, Sort of like an old pair of shoes. Time will tell if Vista proves to a desirable upgrade over XP or not. So far there are two items I have noticed:

After installing everything, hardware, software, documents, pictures etc., I did a system backup. Actually, I have done three in the past days just to get comfortable with how that all worked. After my last backup, which indicated to me had been done successfully, I walked by the computer later on only to notice my screen was black with a note saying my screen saver photos could not be found. A closer look reveled ALL of my photos were missing ! Not good. The backup (external) drive showed the pictures to be there, so I followed the prompts to restore the data only to be presented with a screen that said my last backup was NOT successful. WTF !. No luck, in spite of taking forever to bring back stupid stuff like "HP games", which as far as I know were not lost anyway, no pictures were returned. After a number of tedious hours I managed to retrieve all of the photos (I hope) from 28 separate folders on the external drive. My old method of dragging and dropping the desired folder onto the backup drive may be crude, but it works. I doubt I'll use the Vista full backup program again. If you can't trust the backup process, what's the point ? Note: I also tried a system restore during this process as well with no luck. Why the lost files only included photos I have no idea. I would strongly suggest a regular back up to anyone who is trying Vista, using what ever process you like and confirm that the files are actually in the back up drive.

Another minor observation has to do with the font display. For some reason the clarity of the fonts as used in task bars, message windows, tool bars etc., don't seem to be as clear to me as I recall them from XP. I have played with all the respective settings including changing the font style and checking my monitor for proper settings. None of that seemed to help. It may just be me, but something just looks odd. It will be interesting to see if anyone else has noticed this as well.
